Richard Tyrone Jones
Richard Tyrone Jones (born 1980) is a British Performance poetry, performance poet, writer and comedian. He is director of ''Utter! Spoken Word'' and director of spoken word at the Edinburgh Festival ''Free Fringe''. Career He attended King's College, Cambridge, where he studied History. While there he co-founded comedy group Fat Fat Pope. After the group disbanded in 2001 he began performing poetry, with his first collection, ''Germline'', published in 2009. His poems have also been published in ''Rising'', ''Magma'', ''The Delinquent'' and other magazines. In February 2010 he staged his own funeral at the Whitechapel Art Gallery as a work of performance art. Unknown to him, he had actually developed dilated cardiomyopathy (heart failure) and a few weeks after the performance was admitted to hospital, where he nearly died. The experience provided the material for Jones's debut one-man show, ''Big Heart'', which tries to raise awareness of his condition. With support from the Well ... Performance Poetry
Performance poetry is a broad term, encompassing a variety of styles and genres. In brief, it is poetry that is specifically composed for or during a performance before an audience. During the 1980s, the term came into popular usage to describe poetry written or composed for performance rather than print distribution, mostly open to improvisation. History The term ''performance poetry'' originates from an early press release describing the 1980s performance poet Hedwig Gorski, whose audio recordings achieved success on spoken word radio programs around the world. Vancouver Fringe Festival
The Vancouver Fringe Festival is an annual Fringe theatre, alternative theatre festival held in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada established in 1985. The event is organized and sponsored by the First Vancouver Theatrespace Society, a volunteer Non-profit organization, not-for-profit society. The festival is usually staged in September at a number of venues around the city. Because of the pandemic, the most recent festival ran from September through October, 2020 although it was planned to be through December. History The first Vancouver Fringe Festival was held in 1985. It was centred in Mount Pleasant, Vancouver, Mount Pleasant and held its opening ceremonies in the parking lot of an IGA. The 220 performances were held in seven venues with 4,000 people in attendance—and only 25 volunteers helping out. Pete Doherty
Peter Doherty (born 12 March 1979) is an English musician, songwriter, actor, poet, writer, and artist. He is best known for being co-frontman of The Libertines, which he formed with Carl Barât in 1997. His other musical projects are indie band Babyshambles and Peter Doherty and the Puta Madres. Hackney Empire
Hackney Empire is a theatre on Mare Street, in the London Borough of Hackney. Originally designed by Frank Matcham it was built in 1901 as a music hall, and expanded in 2001. Described by ''The Guardian'' as ‘the most beautiful theatre in London’ it is an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation. History Hackney Empire is a grade II* listed building. Apples and Snakes, based at the Albany Theatre in Deptford, south-east London, is an organisation for performance poetry and the spoken word in England. It has been described as the main organisation promoting performance poetry in Britain. Peterborough Festival
The Peterborough Festival is held annually in the UK city of Peterborough. The festival takes place over a two-week period, usually the last week of June and the first week of July. The first set of events of the festival take place at the embankment, beside the Town Bridge. The second set take place at Central Park next to the Regional College. The festival attracts a crowd of over 100,000 each year, and is aimed and bringing communities together. Parades, music and performances are all included, with Indian, Caribbean and European music featured each year. The festival has also included a fishing event. Spoken Word
Spoken word refers to an oral poetic performance art that is based mainly on the poem as well as the performer's aesthetic qualities. It is a late 20th century continuation of an ancient oral artistic tradition that focuses on the aesthetics of recitation and word play, such as the performer's live intonation and voice inflection. Spoken word is a "catchall" term that includes any kind of poetry recited aloud, including poetry readings, poetry slams, jazz poetry, and hip hop music, and can include comedy routines and prose monologues.
