Richard Turner (Canadian Politician)
Richard Turner (15 August 1843 – 22 December 1917) was a Canadian merchant and legislator. Born in Quebec City, Quebec, the son of James Turner and Susans Frisell, Turner opened a wholesale grocery with a partner called Whitehead & Turner in 1870. In 1886, after Whitehead retired, Turner became the sole owner. He was appointed to the Legislative Council of Quebec for the division of Golfe in 1897. A Liberal, he served until his death in 1917. In 1867, he married Emily Maria Ellis. They had four sons and two daughters. Legislative Council Of Quebec
The Legislative Council of Quebec (French; ''Conseil législatif du Québec'') was the unelected upper house of the bicameral legislature in the Canadian province of Quebec from 1867 to 1968. The Legislative Assembly of Quebec, Legislative Assembly was the elected lower house. The council was composed of 24 members, appointed by the Lieutenant-Governors of Quebec, Lieutenant Governor upon the recommendation of the Premier of Quebec, Premier. Each councillor nominally represented a portion of the Province of Quebec called a division. The boundaries of these divisions were identical to the ones used for Canada East by the Legislative Council of the Province of Canada and were also identical to the boundaries still used today by the Senate of Canada for Quebec. Victoria Cross
The Victoria Cross (VC) is the highest and most prestigious award of the British honours system. It is awarded for valour "in the presence of the enemy" to members of the British Armed Forces and may be awarded posthumously. It was previously awarded by countries of the Commonwealth of Nations, most of which have established their own honours systems and no longer recommend British honours. It may be awarded to a person of any military rank in any service and to civilians under military command. No civilian has received the award since 1879. Richard Ernest William Turner
Lieutenant General Sir Richard Ernest William Turner, (25 July 1871 – 19 June 1961) was a senior Canadian Army officer who served during the Second Boer War and the First World War, and was a recipient of the Victoria Cross. While Turner always displayed great personal courage while under fire, he lacked the acumen for brigade- and division-sized tactics, and the men under his command during the First World War suffered grievous losses in several battles before he was moved into administrative roles. Early life Turner was born in Quebec City, the son of Richard Turner, and worked at his father's grocery and lumber business, rising to partner before the First World War. He later took over the business, when he returned from the War. David Alexander Ross
David Alexander Ross, (March 12, 1819 – July 23, 1897) was a lawyer, businessman and political figure in Quebec. He represented Québec-Comté in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1878 to 1881 as a Liberal. He was born in Quebec City, the son of John Ross. He studied with Daniel Wilkie and at the Petit Séminaire de Québec. Ross went on to article as a lawyer, was called to the bar in 1848 and set up practice at Quebec City, in partnership with Andrew Stuart. In 1841, he bought a foundry, using it to manufacture stoves and other items. In 1852, he became partner in a general store. Ross was also an agent for the Scottish Amicable Life Insurance Society and the Imperial Fire Insurance Company of London. He served as director for the Compagnie de Chemin de Fer Urbain Saint-Jean and the Quebec and Lake St. John Railway. In 1872, he married Harriet Ann Valentine, the widow of James Gibb.
