Richard Henry Boyle, 6th Earl of Shannon (15 May 1860 - 1906) was a politician in Canada's Northwest Territories. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories from 1885 to 1887. Early life Boyle was the son of Henry Boyle, 5th Earl of Shannon and Lady Blanche Emma Lascelles. Political career Boyle ran for a seat to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories in the 1885 Northwest Territories election. He defeated candidate George C. Ives to become the first Member for the new electoral district of Macleod. The Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly, or Legislative Council of the Northwest Territories (with Northwest hyphenated as North-West until 1906), is the legislature and the seat of government of Northwest Territories in Canada. It is a unicameral elected body that creates and amends law in the Northwest Territories. Permanently located in Yellowknife since 1993, the assembly was founded in 1870 and became active in 1872 with the first appointments from the Government of Canada. Until 2014, the assembly was officially defined under federal law as "Legislative Council". However, under Northwest Territories territorial law, it was defined as "Legislative Assembly". The federal name was changed when the Northwest Territories Act was rewritten in 2014. Under different periods of its history it has alternated names. Henry Bentinck Boyle, 5th Earl of Shannon (22 November 1833 in London – 8 February 1890 in Castlemartyr) was an Honorary Colonel of the 2nd Brigade, South Irish Division, Royal Artillery. Earl of Shannon is a title in the Peerage of Ireland. It was created in 1756 for the prominent Irish politician Henry Boyle, who served as Speaker of the Irish House of Commons and as Chancellor of the Irish Exchequer. The earldom is named after Shannon Park in County Cork. The first Earl was made Viscount Boyle, of Bandon, and Baron Castle Martyr at the same time, also in the Peerage of Ireland. Lord Shannon was the second son of Henry Boyle, second son of Roger Boyle, 1st Earl of Orrery, third surviving son of Richard Boyle, 1st Earl of Cork. He was succeeded by his son, the second Earl.
