Rhadine Persephone
The Tooth Cave ground beetle, ''Rhadine persephone'', is an endemic beetle that lives only in karst caves in Texas. They are arthropods of the family Carabidae. The United States government considers these beetles endangered because they are only found in a single cave system. If these caves are destroyed, this beetle will likely go extinct. The cave system is currently threatened by pollution, urban development, and invasion by fire ants. Description This species is a small reddish beetle about 7–8 mm (about ⅓ inch) long. It lives on the ground where it blends in with the silt on the cave floor. Because this beetle lives in caves, its eyes are not well-developed and it is unable to fly. Cedar Park, Texas
Cedar Park is a city and a major suburb of Austin in the state of Texas, approximately to the north-west of the center of Austin. According to the 2020 U.S. Census, the city's population was 77,595. Jollyville, Texas
Jollyville is a neighborhood in the northern part of Austin, Texas, in the United States. In 2010 it was a census-designated place (CDP) in Travis and Williamson counties, but has since been annexed by Austin. The population of the CDP was 16,151 at the 2010 census. History The area was first settled by Henry Rhodes after obtaining a land grant in 1841 of about from the Republic of Texas. The name, however, comes from a later settler, John G. (possibly Grey, but no proof for middle name exist) Jolly, who purchased in 1866. John and his wife, Nancy Isabell (Guill) Jolly, operated a blacksmith shop and store. Critical habitat is a habitat area essential to the conservation of a listed species, though the area need not actually be occupied by the species at the time it is designated. Black-capped Vireo
The black-capped vireo (''Vireo atricapilla'') is a small bird native to the United States and Mexico. It was listed as an endangered species in the United States in 1987. Successful conservation efforts on the U.S. Army's Fort Hood and Fort Sill led to delisting the black-capped vireo in 2018. The IUCN lists the species as vulnerable. Description The black-capped vireo is a songbird about 12 cm (4.5 inches ) in length. Sexually mature males are olive green above and white below with faint yellow flanks. Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge
Balcones Canyonlands is a national wildlife refuge located in the Texas Hill Country to the northwest of Lago Vista, Texas. The refuge was formed in 1992 to conserve habitat for two endangered songbirds, the golden-cheeked warbler and the black-capped vireo, and to preserve Texas Hill Country habitat for numerous other wildlife species. The red imported fire ant (''Solenopsis invicta''), also known as the fire ant or RIFA, is a species of ant native to South America.
