René Peña
René de Jesus Peña Gonzalez (Born in 1957 in Havana) is a Cuban artist specializing in photography, and exposed his pictures in different exhibitions in Cuba (Havana), Spain and in the US (Seattle, Pennsylvania, New York City). History René Peña graduated from the University of Havana with a specialization in English. He took his first pictures with his family camera at the age of eight years but has never had any formal training. His work focuses on the duality between human inability to escape institutionalization and human desire for individualism. His photography is characterized by stark contrasts, between black and white, subject and background, subject and object. His need for contrast is also reflected in his place of residence: Peña currently inhabits the Cerro neighbourhood of Cuba which is home to a mostly poor African-Caribbean population, despite having been an enclave of Havana's richest families in the 19th century. The Ludwig Foundation Of Cuba
The Ludwig Foundation of Cuba (LFC) is a non-governmental, non-profit institution located in Havana, Cuba, created with the mission of protecting and promoting Cuban artists in Cuba and internationally. Queloides
''Queloides'' is an ongoing cultural and curatorial project in Cuban art that seeks to highlight the persistence of racist stereotypes and ideas of racial difference in Cuban society and culture. Initiated in 1997 by artist Alexis Esquivel and by art critic Omar Pascual Castillo, who organized the exhibit ''Queloides I Parte'', the project was later led by the late art critic Ariel Ribeaux Diago, who organized two important additional exhibits: ''Ni músicos ni deportistas'' (“Neither musicians nor athletes,” 1997), for which he wrote an award-winning essay, and ''Queloides'' (1999).
