The tournament, which was held in April 1968 opposite the Masters Tournament, was organized by tournament director Lonnie Nolan. The title sponsor was the bourbon company of the same name. Holston Hills Country Club (Holston Hills C.C.) is located in Knoxville, Tennessee. The clubhouse was built in 1927 and designed by the firm, Barber & McMurry. The golf course was designed by Donald Ross. Following its construction, it was recognized as the finest course in the state and hosted all the important regional events. Holston Hills C.C. is one of Ross's most famous designs and is widely considered to be one of the more untouched Donald Ross designs left in the United States. Stroke play, also known as medal play, is a scoring system in the sport of golf in which the total number of strokes is counted over one or more rounds of 18 holes. In stroke play, the winner is the player who has taken the fewest strokes over the course of the round, or rounds. Larry Mowry
Larry Mowry (born October 20, 1936) is an American professional golfer who played on the PGA Tour and Senior PGA Tour (now known as the Champions Tour). Mowry was born in San Diego, California. He turned pro in 1959. Mowry spent most his regular career as a club professional. He played on the PGA Tour full-time for several years in the 1960s. He won the 1968 Rebel Yell Open and finished T-2 at the 1969 Azalea Open Invitational. His best finish in a major was a T-11 at the 1969 PGA Championship. Mowry's win at the 1987 Crestar Classic made him the first player in Senior PGA Tour history to win an event after making it through the rigors of Monday qualifying. That victory also made him the first former club professional to post an official Senior PGA Tour win. Larry Ziegler (born August 12, 1939) is an American professional golfer who has played on the PGA Tour and the Champions Tour. Ziegler was born in St. Louis and grew up in Creve Coeur, Missouri. He was one of 14 children; he had seven brothers and six sisters. He began as a caddie and worked his way up to head club pro. He turned pro in 1959. Ziegler had more than 40 top-10 finishes in PGA Tour events during his career including three wins. He had three top-10 finishes in major championships; his best was T3 at The Masters in 1976. Donald James Ross (November 23, 1872 – April 26, 1948) was a golf course designer. He was born in Dornoch, Scotland, but became a citizen of and spent most of his adult life in the United States. Ross started his career by being an apprentice to Old Tom Morris at St Andrews in Scotland around 1899. With the help of an American agronomy student, fellow Scotsman Robert White from St. Andrews, Ross decided to move to America. Ross invested all his life savings to move to the United States and walked off the boat with only $2. In America, he got his first job at Oakley Country Club in Watertown, Massachusetts. Rebel Yell is a brand of Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey owned and marketed by Luxco. Rebel Yell is now distilled and aged at Luxco's new distillery, Lux Row Distillers, in Bardstown, Kentucky.
