Real Madrid Balonmano was the handball section of Real Madrid C.F. The team participated in the Liga ASOBAL, the Spanish Handball National Championship, between the year of its creation –1952– until 1959 when the team was dissolved. Real Madrid took part of both handball codes existing by then, "eleven" (11 players per side) and "seven" (7 players). Liga Asobal is the premier professional handball league in Spain. It was founded in 1958 with the name of División de Honor, changing its name to the current name in 1990. Atlético Madrid Balonmano was a handball team that was part of the Atlético sports organization. History Created in the early 1950s, it won 11 Spanish Leagues and 10 Spanish Cups between 1952 and 1987, and reached the final of the 1984-85 European Cup and the 1986-87 EHF Cup; they lost both to, respectively, Metaloplastika Šabac and Granitas Kaunas.
