Reactions To The 2023 Turkey–Syria Earthquakes
Following the 2023 Turkey–Syria earthquakes, various business, government and social factors came into play, including criticism of the response by the governments of both nations, censorship of certain social media, and widespread arrests for the liability of collapsed buildings. In response to the earthquakes, national mourning was declared in Turkey and in other countries, and most foreign leaders offered condolences and support for both Turkey and Syria. 2023 Turkey–Syria Earthquakes
On 6 February 2023, at 04:17 Time in Turkey, TRT (01:17 Coordinated Universal Time, UTC), a 7.8 earthquake struck southern and central Turkey and northern and western Ba'athist Syria, Syria. The epicenter was west–northwest of Gaziantep. The earthquake had a maximum Modified Mercalli intensity scale, Mercalli intensity of XII (''Extreme'') around the epicenter and in Antakya. It was followed by a 7.7 earthquake at 13:24. This earthquake was centered north-northeast from the first. There was widespread damage and tens of thousands of fatalities. The 7.8 earthquake is the largest in Turkey since the 1939 Erzincan earthquake of the same magnitude, and jointly the second-largest in the country, after larger estimates for the 1668 North Anatolia earthquake. 2020 Aegean Sea Earthquake
An earthquake with a moment magnitude of 7.0 occurred on 30 October 2020 about northeast of the Greek island of Samos. Although Samos was closest to the epicentre, it was the large Turkish city İzmir, northeast that was heavily affected—more than 700 residential and commercial structures were seriously damaged or destroyed. One hundred and seventeen people died in İzmir Province while an additional 1,034 were injured. In Greece, there were two fatalities and 19 injured. The earthquake is the List of earthquakes in 2020, deadliest in the year 2020, and the third major earthquake to strike Turkey that year. It generated an unusually large tsunami. Alevism
Alevism (; ; ) is a syncretic heterodox Islamic tradition, whose adherents follow the mystical Islamic teachings of Haji Bektash Veli, who taught the teachings of the Twelve Imams, whilst incorporating some traditions from shamanism. The so-called earthquake tax (also officially known as special communications tax) was introduced in the aftermath of the earthquake in İzmit in 1999 during which over 17,000 people died. Initially introduced as a temporary tax, it became a permanent tax aimed at the prevention of earthquake-related damage. Establishment The earthquake tax was established in November 1999 during the government of Bülent Ecevit and was directed at cable TV, mobile calls, and messaging.
