Boundaries The constituency encompasses Rangpur Sadar Upazila and wards 9 through 33 of Rangpur City Corporation. History The constituency was created for the first general elections in newly independent Bangladesh, held in 1973. Ahead of the 2014 general election, the Election Commission reduced the boundaries of the constituency. Previously it had also included eight union parishads of Rangpur Sadar Upazila: Chandanpat, Darshana, Mominpur, Rjendrapur, Sadya Pushkarni, Satgara, Tamphat, and Tapodhan. Ahead of the 2018 general election, the Election Commission altered the boundaries of the constituency by removing wards 1 through 8 of Rangpur City Corporation, and adding Rangpur Sadar Upazila. Shafiqul Ghani Swapan
Shawfikul Ghaani Swapan was a Bangladeshi politician and the former chairman of Bangladesh National Awami Party-Bangladesh NAP. Rahgir Al Mahi Ershad (born 1983), better known as Saad Ershad, is a Bangladeshi businessman and politician belonging to Jatiya Party. He is the incumbent Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Rangpur-3 constituency. His father Hussain Muhammad Ershad was Former President of Bangladesh and his mother Rowshan Ershad is the current Leader of the opposition of Jatiya Sangsad. Kazi Abdul Kader (1914–2002) was a Pakistani and later Bangladeshi politician. He served as a member of parliament in both the East Pakistan Provincial Assembly and Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad. Hussain Muhammad Ershad
Lt. Gen. Hussain Muhammad Ershad ( bn, হুসেইন মুহাম্মদ এরশাদ; 1 February 1930 – 14 July 2019) was a Bangladeshi Army Chief politician who served as the President of Bangladesh from 1983 to 1990, a time many consider to have been a military dictatorship. He seized power as head of the army during a bloodless coup against President Abdus Sattar on 24 March 1982 (by imposing martial law and suspending the Constitution). He declared himself President in 1983, and subsequently won the controversial 1986 Bangladeshi presidential election. 2018 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 30 December 2018 to elect 300 directly-elected members of the Jatiya Sangsad. The result was a landslide victory for the Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina. According to political scientist Ali Riaz, the elections were not free and fair. The BBC News reported that they were marred by violence and allegations of vote rigging. Opposition leader Kamal Hossain rejected the results, calling it "farcical" and demanding fresh elections to be held under a neutral government. Islami Jatiya Oikya Front
Islami Jatiya Oikya Front (IJOF, lit. Islamic National United Front) was a short-lived political alliance in Bangladesh. Formed in 2001, it was one of the three principal contenders in that year's parliamentary elections. Led by the Jatiya Party (Ershad), it also included the Islami Shashontantra Andolan (ISA) and three smaller parties. The founder of the ISA, Fazlul Karim, declared that IJOF's intention was to establish an Islamic government. Other planks in the party platform included transforming Bangladesh into a federation of eight autonomous provinces, and prohibiting women from becoming prime minister. 2008 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 29 December 2008. The two main parties in the election were the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Khaleda Zia, and the Bangladesh Awami League Party, led by Sheikh Hasina. The Bangladesh Awami League Party formed a fourteen-party Grand Alliance including Ershad's Jatiya Party, while the BNP formed a four-party alliance which included the Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami. The election was originally scheduled for January 2007, but it was postponed by a military-controlled caretaker government for an extended period of time. The elections resulted in a landslide victory for the Awami League-led grand alliance, which won 263 seats out 300. The main rival four-party alliance received only 32 seats, with the remaining four going to independent candidates.
