Islami Jatiya Oikya Front
Islami Jatiya Oikya Front (IJOF, lit. Islamic National United Front) was a short-lived political alliance in Bangladesh. Formed in 2001, it was one of the three principal contenders in that year's parliamentary elections. Led by the Jatiya Party (Ershad), it also included the Islami Shashontantra Andolan (ISA) and three smaller parties. The founder of the ISA, Fazlul Karim, declared that IJOF's intention was to establish an Islamic government. Other planks in the party platform included transforming Bangladesh into a federation of eight autonomous provinces, and prohibiting women from becoming prime minister. The Jatiya Party (Ershad) fielded candidates in 281 of the country's 300 parliamentary constituencies, leaving the remaining 19 to be contested by its junior partners. The front won 14 seats. 2001 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 1 October 2001. The 300 single-seat constituencies of the Jatiya Sangsad were contested by 1,935 candidates representing 54 parties and including 484 independents. The elections were the second to be held under the caretaker government concept, introduced in 1996. The result was a win for the Four Party Alliance of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, Jatiya Party (Manju) and Islami Oikya Jote. Jatiya Party (Ershad)
The Jatiya Party ( bn, জাতীয় পার্টি, translit=Jatiyo Party, lit=National Party) is a conservative, nationalist political party in Bangladesh and is currently the main opposition in the Jatiya Sangsad, against the Awami League. The current chairman of the party is Ghulam Muhammad Quader. On 3 January 2019, the party announced its decision to join the Bangladesh Awami League-led Grand Alliance after having been in opposition for the previous parliamentary term. However, the party backtracked the next day and announced that it intended to remain part of the opposition. Currently, it holds Rangpur out of Bangladesh's 12 city corporations. Islami Andolan Bangladesh ( bn, ইসলামী আন্দোলন বাংলাদেশ, lit=Islamic Movement of Bangladesh) is one of the biggest Islamist political party in Bangladesh. It was founded in 1987 by Fazlul Karim as Islami Shashontantra Andolan (Islamic Constitutional Movement), and took its current name in 2008. Its student wing is Islami Chhatra Andolan Bangladesh. Syed Muhammad Fazlul Karim ( bn, সৈয়দ মোহম্মদ ফজলুল করিম; 1935 – 25 November 2006) was an Islamic scholar and politician. He was the founder of Islami Andolan Bangladesh, and founded a residential madrassah in Charmonai, Barisal, southern Bangladesh. Early life and education Syed Muhammad Fazlul Karim was born in 1935, in the village of Charmonai in Barisal, Bengal Province. He belonged to a Bengali Muslim family who were the hereditary '' Pirs of Charmonai'', with his grandfather, Sayed Amjad Ali, being a descendant of Ali, the fourth Caliph of Islam. His father, Syed Muhammad Ishaq, was the first Pir of Charmonai. Karim began studying with his father at an early age, later joining his father's madrasa in Charmonai. Ali Riaz ( bn, আলী রীয়াজ) is a Bangladeshi American political scientist and writer. He is a Distinguished Professor at Illinois State University where he joined in 2002. Most of his work deals with religion and politics, particularly on South Asian politics and political Islam. He has written extensively on Bangladeshi politics and madrasas in South Asia.
