Rafael Martínez Nadal
Rafael Martínez Nadal (April 22, 1877 – July 6, 1941) was a Puerto Rican politician, senator, journalist, and businessman. He was the third president of the Senate of Puerto Rico, serving from 1933 to 1941. Early years Rafael Martínez Nadal was born on April 22, 1877 in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. He was an orphan from an early age, since his mother, Estebanía Nadal Freyre died hours after his birth, and his father, Rafael Martínez Santana, when he was only five years old. After that, he was raised in Maricao, Puerto Rico by his paternal aunts. He then studied in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Professional life At the age of sixteen, his tutor sent him to Barcelona, Spain to study law. However, he interrupted his studies and went to live in Paris. Luis Sánchez Morales
Senator Luis Sánchez Morales (November 27, 1867 – March 27, 1934) was a Puerto Rican politician who served as the second President of the Senate of Puerto Rico from 1930 to 1932. Biography Sanchez was born on November 27, 1867 in San Juan, to Manuel Sánchez Apellaniz (1847-1884) and his mother Ana Morales Seijo (1853-1915). He had two younger brothers, Manuel (1872-1924) and Francisco (1879-1948). He studied in Ciales and in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In 1884, with his father, he founded a commercial enterprise. In addition to running the family business, he delved into literature, writing for newspapers and magazines during the latter part of the 19th century, before becoming involved in politics. Celestino Iriarte Miró
Celestino Iriarte Miró (December 9, 1887 – January 1967) was a Puerto Rican politician and longtime Senator. He was a member of the Senate of Puerto Rico from 1920 to 1944. Biography Celestino Iriarte Miró was born in 1887 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He worked at the Telégrafo of San Juan and Aguadilla between 1905 and 1910. Iriarte graduated as an attorney from the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico in 1910. Iriarte was President of the Union Youth of San Juan from 1910 to 1912, and a delegate of the Union Party to direct elections in Moca in 1912. He also presided the local Committee of the Union Party of San Juan from 1912 to 1924. Iriarte ran for the Puerto Rico House of Representatives in 1917 for the Union Party, but lost. José Tous Soto (October 2, 1874 – March 22, 1933) was a Puerto Rican politician and former Senator and Representative. Early years and education José Tous Soto was born in San Lorenzo on October 2, 1874. He graduated with a law degree from the University of Oviedo in Spain. Santa María Magdalena De Pazzis Cemetery
__NOTOC__ The Santa María Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery is a colonial-era cemetery located in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. It is the final resting place of many of Puerto Rico's most prominent natives and residents. Construction began in 1863 under the auspices of Ignacio Mascaro. The cemetery is located outside the walls of Fort San Felipe del Morro fortress, one of the island's most famous landmarks. The average height of the wall is 40 feet and the width ranges from 15 to 20 feet. It was named in honor of Saint Maria Magdalena de Pazzi. According to Rafael Rodríguez, Chaplain and director of pastoral services at the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón located in the Santurce district of the capital, the location of the cemetery is central to the Puerto Rican belief in the separation of death and life. Santiago Iglesias Pantín (February 22, 1872 – December 5, 1939), was a Spanish-born Puerto Rican socialist and trade union activist. Iglesias is best remembered as a leading supporter of statehood for Puerto Rico, and as the Resident Commissioner of Puerto Rico in the U.S. Congress from 1933 to 1939. Biography Early years Santiago Iglesias was born in A Coruña, Galicia, Spain, where he attended the common schools, and was apprenticed as a cabinet maker. At a young age he stowed away on a ship which landed in Cuba. There he organized workers and, beginning in 1889 was secretary of the Workingmen Trades Circle in Havana.
