José Tous Soto
José Tous Soto (October 2, 1874 – March 22, 1933) was a Puerto Rican politician and former Senator and Representative. Early years and education José Tous Soto was born in San Lorenzo on October 2, 1874. He graduated with a law degree from the University of Oviedo in Spain. Political career Party alliance Tous began his political career with the Liberal Fusionist Party, led by Luis Muñoz Rivera. He then joined the Republican Party. Legislator In 1900, he was chosen to occupy a seat in the House of Delegates of Puerto Rico, representing the district of Guayama. In 1914, he was elected for another term, this time representing the district of Ponce. In 1917, Tous was a member of the first Puerto Rican Senate established by the Jones-Shafroth Act. Puerto Rico Senatorial District V, also known as the Senatorial District of Ponce, is one of the eight senatorial districts of Puerto Rico. It is currently represented by Marially González Huertas and Ramón Ruiz Nieves (both from the Popular Democratic Party). Rafael Martínez Nadal (April 22, 1877 – July 6, 1941) was a Puerto Rican politician, senator, journalist, and businessman. He was the third president of the Senate of Puerto Rico, serving from 1933 to 1941. Early years Rafael Martínez Nadal was born on April 22, 1877 in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. He was an orphan from an early age, since his mother, Estebanía Nadal Freyre died hours after his birth, and his father, Rafael Martínez Santana, when he was only five years old. ''El Nuevo Día'' (English: ''The New Day'') is the newspaper with the largest circulation in Puerto Rico. It was founded in 1909 in Ponce, Puerto Rico, and today it is a subsidiary of GFR Media.
