Radio is the main source of news and information in South Sudan. Radio History According to surveys conducted by the and USAID, radio is the most widely used and trusted source of information in the country. Radio listening is considered a social activity. Since the Comprehensive Peace Agreement of 2005, over 30 FM radio stations have been set up across the country with the encouragement of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) run government. Radio networks and stations are run and funded by Churches, community organizations, international NGOs, and private businesses. The UN radio station Radio Mirraya, set up in 2006 by the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) in partnership with Foundation Hirondelle, has a wider geographic reach than any other FM station in South Sudan. Khartoum
Khartoum or Khartum ( ; ar, الخرطوم, Al-Khurṭūm, din, Kaartuɔ̈m) is the capital of Sudan. With a population of 5,274,321, its metropolitan area is the largest in Sudan. Sawa Shabab
Sawa Shabab (Youth Together) is a peace building radio drama aired in over thirty local radio stations within the Country of South Sudan. Overview The radio drama hosts a number of young people and has discussions on community problems. Partners The drama series of the Sawa Shabab (Youth Together) is being run and supported by the United States Institute for Peace as well as the Peace Techlab for the production and online airing in Radio stations including the grand and famous Radio Miraya. According to UNICEF, radio programs like this has helped improve the gap of girl child related problems such as early child marriage among others. Eye Radio, formerly Sudan Radio Service, is a 24 hours radio station based in Juba, South Sudan. The radio is available online. History The radio station was established as Sudan Radio Service (SRS) on 30 July 2003 in Nairobi as an USAID-funded Education Development Center (EDC) project and aired in shortwave broadcast. Initially, the radio broadcast news summaries and music for one hour and was available in English, Arabic, Dinka, Azande, Shilluk, Nuer, Bari, and Moru. In 2005, the radio aired the Comprehensive Peace Agreement. In June 2010, SRS went on air from its station in Juba. The radio replaced its name from Sudan Radio Service to Eye Radio in August 2012.
