Hallam FM is an Independent Local Radio station based in Sheffield, England, owned and operated by Bauer as part of the Hits Radio network. It broadcasts to South Yorkshire. As of September 2022, the station has a weekly audience of 283,000 listeners according to RAJAR. History The station started broadcasting on 1548 kHz/194m AM, 95.2 and 95.9 MHz FM under the name of Radio Hallam from its studios at Hartshead in Sheffield City Centre on 1 October 1974. The first presenter heard on air was ex-BBC Radio 1 DJ Johnny Moran - the first record he played was ''I've Got the Music in Me'' by Kiki Dee, which stuck after a minute and a half. On 1 October 1985, Radio Hallam's broadcast area significantly increased when it began to broadcast to all of South Yorkshire. Hillsborough Stadium is a 39,732-capacity association football stadium located in Owlerton, a north-western suburb of Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. It has been the home of Sheffield Wednesday since its opening in 1899. The ground has been substantially re-developed since 1899, with new stands on each side and the original South Stand having been substantially re-built in time for the UEFA Euro 1996 finals. It has two large two-tiered stands and two large single-tiered stands, all of which are covered. Classic Gold
Classic Gold was a network of three "Gold" music formatted stations which broadcast on AM in Bradford, Hull and Sheffield. They were the sister stations of Pennine Radio, Viking Radio and Radio Hallam respectively and they were part of the Yorkshire Radio Network. History On 31 October 1988, Viking Radio split its frequencies and turned its medium wave service into "Viking Gold", thereby becoming Yorkshire Radio Network's first oldies station. Pennine and Hallam soon followed and Classic Gold launched on 1 May 1989. For most of its life, Classic Gold was produced with a presenter in Hull, and local 'tech-ops' in Bradford and Sheffield. In Bradford two sets of adverts would be played out - one for Bradford and one for the Halifax/Huddersfield transmitter. Yorkshire Radio Network
The Yorkshire Radio Network was a group of three radio stations which shared programmes in the evening and at weekends. YRN was made-up of Pennine Radio (radio station), Pennine Radio in Bradford, 96.9 Viking FM, Viking Radio in Kingston upon Hull, Hull and Hallam FM, Radio Hallam in Sheffield. History YRN was based at Hartshead in Sheffield at Radio Hallam, although all of the live programmes came from Studio 2 at Viking Radio in Hull. The company came about when Radio Hallam merged with Pennine Radio and later took over Viking Radio and the Yorkshire Radio Network began broadcasting on 18 May 1987. In 1989 all of the three radio stations' medium wave frequencies were used to form a new service called Classic Gold. YRN was bought by the Metro Radio group and as Pennine was making a loss they decided to rename it and in August 1991 The Pulse of West Yorkshire was born.
