RV MTA Sismik 1
The RV ''MTA Sismik 1'' is a decommissioned Turkish research vessel belonging to Istanbul Technical University. She is operated by its Faculty of Maritime for training purposes. Originally, she was owned by the General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration (MTA) in Ankara and operated by its division of Geophysical Directorate for subsea geophysical exploration. The ship's crew consists of 7 officers and 16 seamen. Research work is conducted by 12 scientists aboard. She has an autonomous endurance of 25 days. History The ship was built by Danziger Werft in Danzig for Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine. Named ''Ägir'', she was launched on May 18, 1942. After World War II, she was taken by the United Kingdom to England, where she was rebuilt as a salvage tug, and renamed ''Hercules'' in 1949. Diesel Engine
The diesel engine, named after Rudolf Diesel, is an internal combustion engine in which ignition of the fuel is caused by the elevated temperature of the air in the cylinder due to mechanical compression; thus, the diesel engine is a so-called compression-ignition engine (CI engine). This contrasts with engines using spark plug-ignition of the air-fuel mixture, such as a petrol engine (gasoline engine) or a gas engine (using a gaseous fuel like natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas). Diesel engines work by compressing only air, or air plus residual combustion gases from the exhaust (known as exhaust gas recirculation (EGR)). Air is inducted into the chamber during the intake stroke, and compressed during the compression stroke. A pilot boat is a type of boat used to transport maritime pilots between land and the inbound or outbound ships that they are piloting.
