RAF Hednesford
Royal Air Force Hednesford or more simply RAF Hednesford is a former Royal Air Force station situated south-east of Stafford, Staffordshire, England. History The RAF station of Hednesford was built just south of Cannock Chase, above the village of Hednesford in 1938/39, on land purchased from the Marquess of Anglesey. Ten officers and fifty other ranks arrived in mid-March 1939. It operated as No 6 School of Technical Training. Royal Air Force and Fleet Air Arm mechanics received technical training on a variety of airframes and engines. The first intake of trainees arrived in April 1939, transferred from RAF Halton. In June 1939 Sir Kingsley Wood, Secretary of State for Air, visited the camp, by which time it already had 1,700 trainees. Accommodation consisted of wooden barrack huts (over 200 of them at their peak). Hednesford
Hednesford (pronounced ) is a historic market town in the Cannock Chase (district), Cannock Chase district of Staffordshire, England. Cannock Chase is to the north, the town of Cannock to the south and Rugeley to the southwest.The population at the 2011 census was 17,343. It also comprises the civil parish of Hednesford and part of the civil parish of Brindley Heath. History Hednesford was a coal mining community for over a century. This is commemorated in the town centre, where a Davy lamp, Miner's Lamp has been erected, surrounded by a wall with individual bricks giving the names of former miners. The Royal Air Force (RAF) is the United Kingdom's air and space force. Cannock Chase (), often referred to locally as The Chase, is a mixed area of countryside in the county of Staffordshire, England. The area has been designated as the Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is managed by Forestry England. The Chase gives its name to the Cannock Chase local government district. The Fleet Air Arm (FAA) is one of the five fighting arms of the Royal Navy and is responsible for the delivery of naval air power both from land and at sea. Royal Air Force Halton, or more simply RAF Halton, is one of the largest Royal Air Force stations in the United Kingdom. It is located near the village of Halton near Wendover, Buckinghamshire. Sir Howard Kingsley Wood (19 August 1881 – 21 September 1943) was a British Conservative politician. The son of a Wesleyan Methodist minister, he qualified as a solicitor, and successfully specialised in industrial insurance. Brindley Heath railway station served the civil parish of Brindley Heath, Staffordshire, England from 1939 to 1959 on the Chase Line. History The station opened to the public on 26 August 1939 by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, although it opened earlier on 3 August for Bank Holiday specials from the RAF base.
