The Queensland Oaks is a Brisbane Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-old fillies, at set weights, run over a distance of 2400 metres at Eagle Farm Racecourse, Brisbane during the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival. Total prize money is A$700,000. History The inaugural running of the race was run as the Queensland Oaks Stakes during the Christmas meeting at Eagle Farm on December 27, 1951 when short odds-on favourite Malt Maid was victorious. By 1953 the race was run on the Queensland Cup race card in November. The race was moved as part of the Brisbane Winter Carnival in 1973. Eagle Farm Racecourse
Eagle Farm Racecourse is a heritage-listed horse racing venue in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is located at the northern end of Racecourse Road in the suburb of Ascot, from the Brisbane central business district. The turf track is wide, with a circumference of and a home straight of . Races are run in a clockwise direction. Doomben Racecourse is located nearby in the same suburb. History The Eagle Farm Racecourse was established in 1863 and it is now the premier racecourse in Brisbane. In 1889–1890, the architecture partnership Hunter and Corrie and architect John H. Evening Peal was a notable Australian thoroughbred racehorse who won the 1956 Melbourne Cup, being ridden by George Podmore. Having run second in the Caulfield Cup to the New Zealand champion Redcraze she was sent out a 15/1 chance. Ethereal (foaled 16 November 1997) is a New Zealand thoroughbred racehorse. The mare is best known for winning the 2001 Melbourne Cup. Background Ethereal is a bay mare owned and bred by brothers Peter and Phillip Vela, who own Pencarrow Stud and New Zealand Bloodstock. Doomben Racecourse
Doomben Racecourse is a horse racing venue in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is located in the suburb of Ascot, 7 kilometres north of the Brisbane central business district. The Doomben course neighbours another thoroughbred venue called the Eagle Farm Racecourse and can be accessed via car, train or bus.
