List Of Australian Group Races
This List of Australian Group races is recognized as a list of Australia's classified Black type thoroughbred horse races. The Pattern Committee of the Australian Racing Board (ARB) recommends which races shall be designated as Group and Listed races for the racing season. The current list is for the 2019–2020 Australian Racing season and the 2019–2020 which began on Monday, 1 August 2019. Black Type
Group races, also known as Pattern races, or Graded races in some jurisdictions, are the highest level of races in Thoroughbred horse racing. They include most of the world's iconic races, such as, in Europe, the Derby, Irish Derby and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, in Australia, the Melbourne Cup and in the United States, the Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup races. Victory in these races marks a horse as being particularly talented, if not exceptional, and they are extremely important in determining stud values. They are also sometimes referred to as Black type races, since any horse that has won one of these races is printed in bold type in sales catalogues. Australian Cup
The Australian Cup is a Victoria Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for horses three years old and older, held under Weight for Age conditions, over a distance of 2000 metres, at Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia in March during the VRC Autumn Racing Carnival. Total prize money for the race is A$1,500,000. History The race was once Australia's premier long distance race, raced at a distance of 18 furlongs (3621m) - thus, longer than the Melbourne Cup. In 1943 the race was shortened to 17 furlongs 110 yards to allow the race to be started from the top of Flemington's famous Straight Six, to have bigger fields. The VRC in the early 1960s shortened the distance to miles to attract classier middle distance gallopers. The Australia Stakes, registered as the Stanley Wootton Stakes, is a Moonee Valley Racing Club Group 2 Thoroughbred horse race raced under weight for age conditions, for three year olds and older, over a distance of 1200 metres at Moonee Valley Racecourse in Melbourne, Australia in late January. Total prize money for the race is A$350,000. History Originally the race was scheduled in March, but in 2002 the MVRC moved the race to late January. The renaming of the race to the current name coincides with the Australia Day public holiday. The Aurie's Star Handicap is a Victoria Racing Club Group 3 horse race held under open handicap conditions, for horses aged three years old and upwards, over a distance of 1200 metres, held annually at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Australia in August. The Australian Oaks is an Australian Turf Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for three year old fillies at set weights run over a distance of 2,400 metres at Randwick Racecourse, Sydney in the autumn during the ATC Championships series. The Australian Oaks is the premier staying race for three-year-old fillies during the Sydney autumn racing carnival. Total prize money is A$1,000,000. History From inception in 1885 to 1894 this race was known as the AJC Oaks. The race was not held between 1895 and 1921, and when it was resumed it was known as the Adrian Knox Oaks Stakes until 1956. Since 1994 this race has been known as the AJC Australian Oaks and after the merger of the AJC and STC as the ATC Australian Oaks. Between 1922 and 1945 the race was held in January.
