Princess Margaret Island
Princess Margaret Island ( da, Prinsesse Margrethe Ø) is an uninhabited island of the Wandel Sea, Greenland. The island is within King Frederick VIII Land in the Northeast Greenland National Park. The island was named after Princess Margaret of Denmark. Geography This island is by far the smallest of the group formed by Princess Thyra Island to the west and Princess Dagmar Island to the south in the Wandel Sea at the confluence of Denmark Sound and Independence Sound. Princess Margaret Island lies 13 km to the east of larger Princess Thyra Island. Wandel Sea
The Wandel Sea ( da, Wandelhavet; also known as McKinley Sea) is a body of water in the Arctic Ocean, stretching from northeast of Greenland to Svalbard. It is obstructed by ice most of the year. This sea is named after Danish polar explorer and hydrographer, Vice Admiral Carl Frederick Wandel, who in the years 1895–96 explored the coastal waters of Greenland as part of the Danish Ingolf Expedition. Geography This arctic sea is located at 82° north longitude and 21° west latitude. Northeast Greenland National Park ( kl, Kalaallit Nunaanni nuna eqqissisimatitaq, da, Grønlands Nationalpark) is the world's largest national park and the 10th List of largest protected areas in the world, largest protected area (the only larger protected areas all consist mostly of sea). King Frederick VIII Land ( da, Kong Frederik VIII Land) is a major geographic division of northeastern Greenland. It extends above the Arctic Circle from 76°N to 81°N in a N/S direction along the coast of the Greenland Sea. History This vast desolate region was still uncharted territory around 1900. Princess Margaret of Denmark (Margrethe Françoise Louise Marie Helene; 17 September 1895 – 18 September 1992) was a Danish princess by birth and a princess of Bourbon-Parma as the wife of Prince René of Bourbon-Parma. Princess Dagmar Island ( da, Prinsesse Dagmar Ø) is an uninhabited coastal island of the Wandel Sea in King Frederick VIII Land, Greenland. The island was named after Princess Dagmar of Denmark. The Danish military base/weather station Nord is located in the mainland east of the island, on the western side of Crown Prince Christian Land Peninsula. In Vol. 14 of the ''Encyclopedia Arctica'' (unpublished, completed in 1951), Princess Dagmar Island is still not recognized as an island, but mentioned as a peninsula. Denmark Sound
Danmark Fjord (), also known as Denmark Sound, is a fjord in northeast Greenland. Administratively it belongs to the Northeast Greenland National Park. The fjord was explored and named after the expedition ship '' Danmark'' at the time of the ill-fated Denmark expedition 1906-1908 led by Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen, which mapped Greenland's northeastern coast between Cape Bridgman and Cape Bismarck. History In May 1907 Mylius-Erichsen entered the unknown Danmark Fjord with his three-dogsled exploration team, deeming it would be leading him to the Navy Cliff and the postulated Peary Channel, which in fact did not exist. Independence Sound
Independence Fjord or Independence Sound is a large fjord or sound in the eastern part of northern Greenland. It is about long and up to wide. Its mouth, opening to the Wandel Sea of the Arctic Ocean is located at . In the area around Independence Fjord there are traces of two paleo-Eskimo cultures that were named Independence I culture and Independence II culture after the fjord.
