Preston Island
Preston Island is a former artificial island in the Firth of Forth, Scotland. The reclaimed land was once used for salt production, using local coal. It is part of Fife. History Preston Island, south of Valleyfield, Fife, Low Valleyfield in the Firth of Forth, was reclaimed by Sir Robert Preston, 6th Baronet in the early 19th century. A sea wall was constructed, followed by buildings and a coal mining, coal mine, producing coal for the production of salt in salt evaporation pond, saltpans on the island. Two further coal shafts were in development when a fatal firedamp explosion occurred in 1811, after which the mine was closed. Salt production continued for some decades, under lease from Preston. The buildings later housed an illicit distillery. Several well-maintained ruins remain. The 'island' is no longer surrounded by water, following further land reclamation, using bottom ash, ash from the nearby Longannet power station. Footnotes

Islands Of The Forth
The Islands of the Forth are a group of small islands located in the Firth of Forth and in the estuary of the River Forth on the east coast of Scotland. The islands have a varied geology and history; over the centuries, several have had both ecclesiastical connections and a history of involvement in military occupations. Various lighthouses and other aids to navigation have been erected on the islands and skerries — one of these dates to the 17th century. But only one of the islands still has year-round human inhabitants. The area has diverse bird and sea life. The scientific name for the northern gannet was chosen in recognition of this bird's connection with the Bass Rock. There are only a few islands off the coast of eastern Scotland, and most of them of any significant size are incl ...
