Politics of Alderney takes place in a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic British Crown dependency, whereby the President of the States of Alderney is the head of government. Alderney is part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey but is largely self-governing. History Before the 1949 reforms, Alderney's legislature had no political affiliation as all positions in the States of Alderney (French: États d'Aurigny) were appointed. Sir Norman Leslie Browse (1 December 1931 – 12 September 2019) was a British surgeon and President of the States of Alderney from 2002 to 2011. Professional life Between 1965 and 1996, Sir Norman was Professor of Surgery and a Consultant Surgeon at St. Thomas's Hospital, London. From 1992 until 1995 he was President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
