Polistes Comanchus
''Polistes comanchus'' is a species of paper wasp from northwestern Mexico to the south central United States. Taxonomy It was described in 1857 by Henri Louis Frédéric de Saussure using a collection from Nuevo México - this does not correspond to the modern state of New Mexico, but at the time was a formerly Mexican territory which had recently been conquered and annexed by the USA, and included everything in between modern Nevada to east Texas. He had travelled to this region in 1856. In 1978 Owain Richards classified ''P. comanchus'' in a subgenus he named ''Aphanilopterus'' after an old synonym of ''P. lanio'' by Fernand Anatole Meunier, he further placed it in a "species group 1". Henri Louis Frédéric De Saussure
Henri Louis Frédéric de Saussure (; ; 27 November 1829 – 20 February 1905) was a Swiss mineralogist and entomologist specialising in studies of Hymenoptera and Orthopteroid insects. He also was a prolific taxonomist. Biography Saussure's elementary education was at Alphonse Briquet's then, as an adolescent, at the Hofwyl school run by Philipp Emanuel von Fellenberg. At the University of Geneva he was taught by François Jules Pictet de la Rive, who introduced him to entomology. After several years of study in Paris he received the degree of licentiate of the Faculty of Paris and obtained the degree of Doctor from the University of Giessen. He worked mainly on Hymenoptera and Orthoptera. His first paper, in 1852, was on solitary wasps. In 1854 he traveled to the West Indies, then to Mexico and the United States of America. A not evaluated (NE) species is one which has been categorized under the IUCN Red List of threatened species as not yet having been assessed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. This conservation category is one of nine IUCN threat assessment categories for species to indicate their risk of global extinction. The categories range from 'extinct' (EX) at one end of the spectrum, to ‘least concern’ (LC) at the other.
