Petrophile Latericola
''Petrophile latericola'' is a species of flowering plant in the family Proteaceae and is endemic to southwestern Western Australia. It is an erect shrub with needle-shaped leaves and spherical heads of bright yellow flowers. Description ''Petrophile latericola'' is an erect shrub that typically grows to a height of high and has glabrous branchlets and leaves. The leaves are needle-shaped, long and sharply pointed. The flowers are arranged on the ends of branchlets in sessile, more or less spherical heads with fifteen to thirty-five flowers. The flowers are long and bright yellow with many tapering linear involucral bracts at the base. Flowering has been observed in November and the fruit is a nut, fused with others in a spherical head about long. Gregory John Keighery is an Australian botanist. Since 2003 he has been a senior research scientist at the Science and Conservation Division of the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions of Western Australia (formerly the Department of Environment and Conservation then the Department of Parks and Wildlife). His main expertise is in the native plants of Western Australia, particularly weed flora and the Apiaceae, Liliaceae and Myrtaceae. Career Keighery has a BSc in plant genetics from the University of Western Australia. From 1974 to 1983 he worked in biosystematics at the Kings Park and Botanic Garden in Perth, Western Australia. ''Petrophile'' is a genus of evergreen shrubs, in the family Proteaceae. The genus is endemic (ecology), endemic to Australia. The Declared Rare and Priority Flora List is the system by which Western Australia's conservation flora are given a priority. Developed by the Government of Western Australia's Department of Environment and Conservation, it was used extensively within the department, including the Western Australian Herbarium. The Interim Biogeographic Regionalisation for Australia (IBRA) is a biogeographic regionalisation of Australia developed by the Australian government's Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population, and Communities. It was developed for use as a planning tool, for example for the establishment of a national reserve system. The first version of IBRA was developed in 1993–94 and published in 1995. Laterite is both a soil and a rock type rich in iron and aluminium and is commonly considered to have formed in hot and wet tropical areas. Nearly all laterites are of rusty-red coloration, because of high iron oxide content. They develop by intensive and prolonged weathering of the underlying parent rock, usually when there are conditions of high temperatures and heavy rainfall with alternate wet and dry periods. Proteaceae
The Proteaceae form a family of flowering plants predominantly distributed in the Southern Hemisphere. The family comprises 83 genera with about 1,660 known species. Together with the Platanaceae and Nelumbonaceae, they make up the order Proteales. Well-known genera include ''Protea'', ''Banksia'', ''Embothrium'', ''Grevillea'', ''Hakea'' and ''Macadamia''.
