''Prostitute'' is the fourth studio album by German synth-pop band Alphaville. Overview Following "the sci-fi-themed ''Afternoons in Utopia'' and the lushly orchestrated ''The Breathtaking Blue''", it was Alphaville's first release for five years. Having "a great variety of styles", this "jazzy and EDM-influenced" "dark theatrical album proved too abstract to achieve any notoriety". "The lack of commercial success led the band to return to its synth/dance roots with the following album, ''Salvation''". Alphaville (band)
Alphaville is a German synth-pop band formed in Münster in 1982. They gained popularity in the 1980s. The group was founded by singer Marian Gold, Bernhard Lloyd, and Frank Mertens. They achieved chart success with the singles " Forever Young", " Big in Japan", "Sounds Like a Melody", "The Jet Set" and " Dance with Me". Gold remains the only continuous member of Alphaville. History Formation Alphaville was formed after lead singer Marian Gold and Bernhard Lloyd met in Berlin in 1981. The pair were heavily influenced by UK indie acts like Tubeway Army, Gary Numan and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD). Bernhard Lloyd (born Bernhard Gössling on 2 June 1960) is a former member and co-founder of the German synth-pop band Alphaville. Before he joined the band, he did not play keyboards – instead, he was previously a club DJ. In 2001, Lloyd also worked on a project named ''Atlantic Popes'' with singer Max Holler, a 13-track CD. He left Alphaville in 2003. Lloyd produces German bands in his studio, mainly electronic music in Berlin. He remixed the catalog of Alphaville, and remains in contact with lead singer Marian Gold. Ricky Echolette (born Wolfgang Neuhaus) is a former member of the German synth-pop Alphaville, utilizing his role on keyboards, piano and guitars - from 1985 until his departure in 1997. In January 1985, he replaced Frank Mertens, who had just left Alphaville, after the release of their first album '' Forever Young''. "Big in Japan" is the debut single of the German synth-pop band Alphaville. It was taken from their 1984 debut album '' Forever Young''. The single was a success in many countries, including Germany, Sweden and Switzerland. It was also the group's only UK Top 75 hit, reaching No. 8 on the UK Singles chart. The song also reached number one on the Hot Dance Club Play in December 1984. Lyrics, music and theme The group had a Roland System-100M which they first used to create the bassline. The timing of the song was influenced by "The Safety Dance", changing the speed to double-time, halfway through the song. The melody was developed by all three members of the band, working in their provincial home studio. Marian Gold developed most of the lyrics while going to a dentist. Marian Gold (born Hartwig Schierbaum; 26 May 1954) is a German singer-songwriter who gained fame as the lead singer of the German synth-pop recording act Alphaville, but also has recorded as a solo artist. He is known for his tenor multi-octave vocal range. Biography Early life Born in Herford, West Germany, Gold became part of the Berlin art collective the Nelson Community, where he formed the band Chinchilla Green in the late 1970s, which also included future Alphaville colleague Bernhard Lloyd. ''The Breathtaking Blue'' is the third album by German synth-pop band Alphaville, released in April 1989. A companion video, ''Songlines'', was released in September 1989. The CD release of this album was one of the first commercial CD+G format discs.
