Professional Bowls Association
The Professional Bowls Association is an international organisation which promotes bowls worldwide and organises competitions, including the World Indoor Bowls Championships with other Bowls Associations. It also operates as the world governing body for Bowls. History Beginnings In 1990 the sport was under a period of fragmentation following the loss of the television coverage connected with the World Indoor Championships. John Hall the President of the English Bowls Association unsuccessfully called for closer co-operation between the indoor and outdoor game. In addition there were 20 national associations and authorities, a crown Green Association and short mat rules. Preston Guildhall
Preston Guild Hall is an entertainment venue in Preston, Lancashire, England. History The Guild Hall was commissioned to replace the town's Public Hall. The new building, which was designed by Robert Matthew, Johnson Marshall, was due to be ready for the Preston Guild of 1972, but after construction was delayed, it only officially opened in 1973. The complex has two performance venues, the Grand Hall which holds 2,034 people and the Charter Theatre which holds 780 people. There is direct pedestrian access, via footbridge, from the adjacent Preston bus station and car park. Artists that have performed at the venue include Martha Argerich, Morrissey, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, The Jackson 5, Thin Lizzy, Busted and Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel among others. Bowls
Bowls, also known as lawn bowls or lawn bowling, is a sport in which the objective is to roll biased balls so that they stop close to a smaller ball called a "jack" or "kitty". It is played on a bowling green, which may be flat (for "flat-green bowls") or convex or uneven (for "crown green bowls"). It is normally played outdoors (although there are many indoor venues) and the outdoor surface is either natural grass, artificial turf or cotula (in New Zealand). Tom Weir
Thomas Weir MBE (29 December 1914 – 6 July 2006) was a Scottish climber, author and broadcaster. He was best known for his long-running television series ''Weir's Way''. Early life and career Weir was born in Springburn, Glasgow, and the younger brother of the actress Molly Weir. After service in the Royal Artillery during World War II, he worked as a surveyor for the Ordnance Survey, before commencing a full-time career as a climber, writer and photographer. In 1950 he was a member of the first post-war Himalayan expedition and, in 1952, was one of the first to explore the previously closed mountain ranges of Nepal, east of Kathmandu. Media career and later life Weir became a pioneering campaigner for the protection of the Scottish environment, and wrote a column for ''The Scots Magazine'' for over 50 years. The World Bowls Tour is an international organisation which promotes indoor bowls worldwide and organises competitions, including the World Indoor Bowls Championships with other bowls associations. Its parent organisation is the Professional Bowls Association. History On 1 January 1997, under the then chairman Richard Corsie, the PBA created the World Bowls Tour (WBT) and after the 1997 championship replaced the World Indoor Bowls Council as the leading indoor organisation. Richard Corsie
Richard Corsie MBE (born 27 November 1966) is a Scottish international outdoor and indoor bowls player, he is considered to be among the best bowls players of all time. Bowls career Corsie won the World Indoor Bowls Championships singles title three times during his career and also won the pairs title twice with Alex Marshall and Graham Robertson respectively. He won the pairs title at the 1992 World Outdoor Bowls Championship with Marshall and two years later won a Commonwealth Games gold medal in the singles at the 1994 Commonwealth Games beating his long-time nemesis and friend Tony Allcock in the final. In 1987, he won the Hong Kong International Bowls Classic singles title, in addition to winning the pairs titles in 1988. 1992 World Indoor Bowls Championship
The 1992 Midland Bank World Indoor Bowls Championship was held at Preston Guild Hall, Preston, England, from 21 February - 1 March 1992. In the Singles Ian Schuback won the title beating John Price in the final. Schuback had beaten David Holt in the quarter-finals in a match that lasted four hours 45 minutes. In the Pairs David Bryant and Tony Allcock secured their sixth world title and fourth consecutive title. Bowls England
Bowls England governs the game of flat green outdoor bowls for men and women in England. It was formed on 1 January 2008 following a merger of the English Bowling Association and the English Women's Bowling Association. The English Bowling Association had previously been founded in 1903 by legendary cricketer W.G. Grace who was elected its first president.Rae, p.478. The headquarters of Bowls England are at Riverside House, Milverton Hill, Leamington Spa, having moved from Worthing in 2013. The move was partly due to the fact that both the men's and women's national championships are held at Victoria Park, just five minutes walk away. There are thirty-five affiliated county bowling associations, to which a total of 2,700 clubs are in membership nationwide. World Indoor Bowls Championships
The World Indoor Bowls Championship is an international bowls competition held annual at Potters holiday park in Hopton on Sea. The last week of the competition is televised live on BBC where the open singles and open pairs', women's singles and mixed pairs' finals are shown. History The competition was first held in 1979 in Coatbridge, Scotland as a men's singles only event. The first event was sponsored by Embassy Cigarettes. In 1986, the men's pairs competition was added to the championship. In 1988, a rule change allowed women to compete for the first time and the women's singles competition was created. This rule change also changed expanded the men's singles and pairs competition and both become open tournaments. In 1989, the championships moved to the Guild Hall in Preston, England And Churchill Insurance took over the sponsorship.
