Potchefstroom University For Christian Higher Education
The Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education (abbreviated as PU for CHE) was a South African university located in Potchefstroom. Instruction was mainly in Afrikaans. In 2004, the university was merged with other institutions to create the North-West University. History Founded Potchefstroom University developed out of the Theological School of the Reformed Churches in South Africa ('' Gereformeerde Kerke in Suid-Afrika'' in Afrikaans, abbreviated as ''GKSA''), which was founded on 29 November 1869 in Burgersdorp, Cape Province. At the founding meeting, it was decided that education would also be offered to prospective teachers and to persons without any particular profession in mind. Pieter Vorster
Pieter Willem Vorster (16 September 1906 – 10 June 2001) was a South African agronomist and chancellor of The Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education. Beginnings Pieter Willem Vorster was born on 16 September 1906 in Postmasburg, Cape Province, South Africa. He was the son of Lodiwikus Francois Vorster and Magdalena Maria Snyman. He married Martha Sophia du Plessis on 16 July 1934, the daughter of Izak David du Plessis and Jacoba Helena. He died in Pretoria on 10 June 2001. Education He completed his High School at Graaff-Reinet Volkskool. He completed his post school studies at Stellenbosch University where he obtained a B.Sc, M.Sc and PhD. Work Vorster was a lecturer at Elsenburg Agricultural College, near Stellenbosch for 15 years. Johannes "Jan" de Klerk, (22 July 1903 – 24 January 1979) was a South African politician. He was the father of F. W. de Klerk, the last apartheid State President of South Africa. Francois Jacobus Du Toit
Francois Jacobus du Toit (25 August 1897 - 17 March 1961) was a South African journalist and economist who represented the Union of South Africa as Trade Commissioner in London, and later served as chancellor of the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education. Early life and education Du Toit was born on 25 August 1897 in Colesberg, Cape Colony. He was the son of Francois Jacobus du Toit (1861-1931), a South African senator, and Anna Sophia van der Walt. He was the oldest of five children. He graduated from Paarl Gimnasium in 1915, studied at the theology school of the Reformed Churches in South Africa at Potchefstroom University and subsequently obtained a BA degree in economics and history from Stellenbosch University. Totius (poet)
Jacob Daniël du Toit (21 February 1877 – 1 July 1953), better known by his pen name Totius, was an Afrikaner poet. He was the son of Stephanus Jacobus du Toit and Elisabeth Jacoba Joubert. Life The poet D.J. Opperman compiled brief biographical notes in Afrikaans about Du Toit. Du Toit began his education at the Huguenot Memorial School at Daljosafat in the Cape (1883–1885). He then moved to a German mission school named Morgensonne near Rustenburg from 1888 to 1890 before returning, between 1890 and 1894, to his original school at Daljosafat. Later he attended a theological college at Burgersdorp before becoming a military chaplain with the Boer Commandos during the Second Boer War. After the war, he studied at the Vrije Universiteit, Free University in Amsterdam and received a Doctor of Theology degree. Carolus Johannes Reinecke was the rector of the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, situated in Potchefstroom, South Africa. Roots Reinecke was born on 21 December 1941, in Krugersdorp, South Africa. He was the son of Carolus Johannes Reinecke and Cornelia Marthina van Dyk. He passed standard 10 (grade 12) at Piet Potgieter High in Potgietersrus, Northern Transvaal. Tjaart van der Walt (15 February 1934 – 22 February 2019) was the Rector of Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, a Bible translator and later a diplomat. Personal life Van der Walt was born on 15 February 1934 in Pietersburg, Northern Transvaal, South Africa. He was the son of Johannes Jacob van der Walt and Maria Jacoba de Klerk. He married Heiltje Johanna Gertruida Snyman on 30 December 1958. She was the daughter of Johannes Jurie Snyman and Maria Magdalena Venter. Hendrik Johannes Jacob Bingle
Hendrik (Hennie) Johannes Jacob Bingle (1910–2007) was a Calvinist, educator and Rector of the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education in Potchefstroom, South Africa. Roots Bingle was born on 15 August 1910 in Colesberg, Cape Province, South Africa. He was the son of Pieter Willem Bingle and Albertje Catharina Andria Coetzee. Ferdinand Postma
Ferdinand Postma was the first rector of the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, in Potchefstroom, South Africa. Personal life Postma was the second son of Marthinus Postma and Elizabeth Wilhelmina Josina Spiller. He was born on 15 July 1879 in Aliwal North, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. In 1880 the family moved to Burgersdorp. Up till 1890 he went to school in Burgersdorp. In 1890 his father, a pastor moved to Middelburg and Postma attend the Christian school there. He passed standard 10 (grade 12) in 1896 in Burgersdorp. He passed the intermediate exam of the University of Good Hope in Cape Town. After the local war in South Africa he studied with a bursary at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Here he completed his Theological studies.
