Postcommodity
Postcommodity, a Southwest Native American Artist collective, was founded in 2007 by Kade Twist and Steve Yazzie Their name refers to the "commodity era" of Native American art trading in the late 1800s and 1900s, with the "post" being in reference to their modern take on traditional Native art forms. Their current members include Kade Twist and Cristobal Martinez. Former members are Raven Chacon (2009-2018), Steve Yazzie (2007-2010) and Nathan Young. (2007-2015) Art style Postcommodity makes use of modern technology (sound, video, etc.) in a way that goes against what would be considered as Native American "Commodity Art". Much of this work has been considered as Asmr. Recently, they have been incorporating their work into architecture, such as adding speakers to pre-existing buildings, or creating their own structures. Raven Chacon
Raven Chacon (born 1977) is a Diné-American composer, musician and artist. Born in Fort Defiance, Arizona within the Navajo Nation, Chacon became the first Native American to win a Pulitzer Prize for Music, for his '' Voiceless Mass'' in 2022. He has also been a solo performer of noise music and worked with groups such as Postcommodity. Life and career Raven Chacon was born in 1977 in Fort Defiance, Arizona, US within the Navajo Nation. He attended the University of New Mexico, where he obtained his BA in Fine Arts in 2001, then received an MFA in music composition from the California Institute of the Arts. He was a student of James Tenney, Morton Subotnick, Michael Pisaro and Wadada Leo Smith. Chacon's visual and sonic artwork has been exhibited widely in the U.S. and abroad. Cristóbal Martínez
Cristóbal Martínez is a Chicano artist and the founder oRadio Healer an indigenous hacker collective. He is a member of Postcommodity, a Southwest Native American Artist collective. His work was featured in the 17th Whitney Biennial,57th Carnegie International and the Sundance Film Festival. He currently is an Associate Professor at the San Francisco Art Institute. Education Martínez attended Arizona State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in studio art and painting in 2002. He remained at the university to earn a master's degree in media art in 2011 and a PhD in rhetoric, composition and linguistics in 2015. In 2003, he founded the Radio Healer. Radio Healer Martínez founded the indigenous hacker collective Radio Healer in 2003, a year after completing his first degree at Arizona State University. Steven Yazzie
Steven Yazzie (born 1970) is a Native American artist, who is enrolled in the Navajo Nation and of Laguna Pueblo descent of his father's side. He creates video art and installation environments but described painting as his first and most important medium. Personal life Yazzie was born in Newport Beach, California, during 1970 and has three younger brothers. His parents divorced when he was four and less than a year later his mother married to a Navajo man. When he was six years old Yazzie's stepfather moved the family to an Arizona reservation in Black Mesa. Yazzie later joined the Marine Corps and participated in the first Gulf War, in Desert Storm and Desert Shield. When he returned Yazzie discovered that his paternal grandfather had participated in World War II as a code-talker. His grandfather has inspired and been included in many pieces. Documenta 14
documenta 14 was the fourteenth edition of the art exhibition documenta and took place in 2017 in both Kassel, Germany, its traditional home, and Athens, Greece. It was held first in Athens from 8 April to 16 July, and in Kassel from 10 June to 17 September 2017. As part of the concept of the artistic director Adam Szymczyk, the exhibition proceeded in both countries with most featured artists working at both locations. Adelaide International (art Exhibition)
The Adelaide International was a biennial art exhibition held in at the Samstag Museum of Art in Adelaide, South Australia, in partnership with the Adelaide Festival of the Arts, from 2010 to 2014. The series featured a range of contemporary visual works from artists based outside Australia. After a pause in the partnership was agreed, the exhibition was revived by the Samstag in 2019 as a series of three annual events, with the new title Adelaide//International, with a different context and concept: the 2019 exhibition was about the effect of colonisation on indigenous culture. An artist collective is an initiative that is the result of a group of artists working together, usually under their own management, towards shared aims. The aims of an artist collective can include almost anything that is relevant to the needs of the artist; this can range from purchasing bulk materials, sharing equipment, space or materials, to following shared ideologies, aesthetic and political views or even living and working together as an extended family. Sharing of ownership, risk, benefits, and status is implied, as opposed to other, more common business structures with an explicit hierarchy of ownership such as an association or a company. San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) was a private college of contemporary art in San Francisco, California. Founded in 1871, SFAI was one of the oldest art schools in the United States and the oldest west of the Mississippi River. The Carnegie International is a North American exhibition of contemporary art from around the globe. It was first organized at the behest of industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie on November 5, 1896 in Pittsburgh.
