Possum Paddock
''Possum Paddock'' is a 1921 Australian film based on a popular play by Kate Howarde. It was the first Australian feature film to be directed by a woman. Only portions of it survive today. Plot Andrew "Dad" McQuade (John Cosgrove), a tough farmer, faces ruin because of a bank loan he cannot repay. He decides to sell a fifty-acre field called 'Possum Paddock' to his greedy neighbour, Dan Martin (James Martin). However, Hugh Bracken (Jack Kirby), who is dating McQuade's daughter, Nancy (Leslie Adrien), sells his car to pay off the old man's debts. He then discovers that a railway is to go through the paddock and is worth a fortune. Kate Howarde
Catherine Clarissa Howarde (28 July 1864 – 18 February 1939), as stage name Kate Howarde, was an actress, playwright, producer and director. She is best known for her play ''Possum Paddock'' (1919). The talented Howarde also played a part in numerous roles as a playwright in over 10 plays from 1914-1938. She was the first Australian woman to direct a feature film. Early and personal life Howarde, was born on 28 July 1864 to parents Edward George Jones and Harriett Hannah in England before migrating to New Zealand as a child. Kate married her first husband William Henry de Saxe who was a musician; the pair married in Christchurch, New Zealand on 28 April 1884. The couple had one child together, Florence Adrienne (born 5 December 1884). Years went by and Saxe and Howarde separated. The registry has no exact dates when she separated from her first husband. Charles Villiers (actor)
Charles Villiers was an Australian actor and occasional director who appeared in many silent films. According to a contemporary report, "there is probably no actor in Australia that has done more consistent picture work than Mr. Villiers, both as heavy lead, and director." He was particularly well known for playing villains. Biography In 1912 Villiers managed Lytton's Picture Stadium in Orange. Villiers started working in films for the Australian Photoplay Company for whom he was one of their main actors. He then made a series of films for the Fraser Film Release and Photographic Company. In 1914 he toured for 12 months with the Oliver Dramatic Company. Beaumont Smith later estimated Villiers appeared in more than 60 silent films. His wife was also an actor. John Cosgrove (1867 – 11 August 1925) was an Australian actor, writer and director who worked in theatre and films during the silent era. Personal life Cosgrove had a turbulent personal life. He would borrow money so often he was nicknamed "The Great Australian Bite". His first daughter died when a few days old. Lacey Percival (11 February 1885 - 7 August 1968) was an Australian cinematographer who worked on many early Australian silent films. He worked for the Australian Photo-Play Company then joined West's Pictures. When that company merged with Australasian Films he ran their weekly newsreel, ''Australasian Gazette'' until 1925. Two years later he went to work for Automatic Film Laboratories, then in 1935 established Percival Film Laboratories which he ran until his retirement in 1948. Fred MacDonald
Fred MacDonald (1895–1968), was an Australian actor best known for playing Dave Rudd opposite Bert Bailey on stage and screen, starting with the original 1912 production of ''On Our Selection''. He also played a similar role, Jim Hayseed, several times on screen for director Beaumont Smith. Biography MacDonald was born in Scotland and moved to Australia when he was four. He established himself as a matinee idol on stage, acting with the Allan Wilkie Shakespeare Company. He first appeared opposite Bert Bailey in a comic part in ''The Shamrock and the Rose''. He hit it off with Bailey, who cast him in ''On Our Selection''. Bailey and MacDonald also appeared on stage together in ''The Sentimental Bloke'', playing Ginger Mick and the title role respectively. ''The Argus'' was an Australian daily morning newspaper in Melbourne from 2 June 1846 to 19 January 1957, and was considered to be the general Australian newspaper of record for this period. Charles Cozens Spencer (12 February 1874 – c. September 1930) was a British-born film exhibitor and producer, who was a significant figure in the early years of the Australian film industry. He produced films under the name Spencer's Pictures and was an early backer of the films of Raymond Longford. He was also instrumental in the creation of " The Combine". Biography Spencer was born in Hunston, Sussex, the third son of Cornelius Cosens, farmer, and his wife Ellen. In 1892 he emigrated to British Columbia, Canada, with his brother Arthur in order to look for gold. He did a variety of jobs then in 1894 formed a company of providers with his brother Sidney at Fairview and Camp McKinney. In 1898 he was a clerk at Vernon. The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA), known as ScreenSound Australia from 1999 to 2004, is Australia's audiovisual archive, responsible for developing, preserving, maintaining, promoting and providing access to a national collection of film, television, sound, radio, video games, new media, and related documents and artefacts.
