Charles Villiers (actor)
Charles Villiers was an Australian actor and occasional director who appeared in many silent films. According to a contemporary report, "there is probably no actor in Australia that has done more consistent picture work than Mr. Villiers, both as heavy lead, and director." He was particularly well known for playing villains. Biography In 1912 Villiers managed Lytton's Picture Stadium in Orange. Villiers started working in films for the Australian Photoplay Company for whom he was one of their main actors. He then made a series of films for the Fraser Film Release and Photographic Company. In 1914 he toured for 12 months with the Oliver Dramatic Company. Beaumont Smith later estimated Villiers appeared in more than 60 silent films. His wife was also an actor. ''The Leader'' was an English language newspaper published in Orange, New South Wales from 1890 to 1945 being a successor to the ''Orange Liberal''. It began briefly as ''The Orange Leader'', then ''The Orange Leader and Millthorpe Messenger'' before the masthead became ''The Leader'' for more than forty years. History The ''Orange Liberal'' was started as a weekly newspaper about 4 May 1878, the title being changed to ''The Orange Leader'' on 4 October 1890. The paper was operated from premises on the southern side of the Forester’s Hall in Lords Place, the Hall being the only building to separate ''The Orange Leader'' and its rival paper the ''Western Advocate''. In 1894 the poet and author William Goodge became proprietor and editor, a role he held until c1899 when he left Orange, unable to pay the paper’s debts. Plot A newspaper journalist, Stanley Lane (Boyd Irwin), discovers a German spy ring in Sydney led by Carl Hoffman (Charles Villiers). Lane is captured and imprisoned by Germans on an uncharted Pacific Island. With the help of half-caste Samoan girl Kana (Alma Rock Phillips) he escapes and destroys a German wireless station in Samoa.
