John Cosgrove (actor)
John Cosgrove (1867 – 11 August 1925) was an Australian actor, writer and director who worked in theatre and films during the silent era. Personal life Cosgrove had a turbulent personal life. He would borrow money so often he was nicknamed "The Great Australian Bite". His first daughter died when a few days old. Accessed 1 August 2009 was a comedian and theatrical producer, active in Australia. Biography Holt was the son of Joseph Frederick Holt (known as Clarance) and his first wife Marie, ''née'' Brown. Holt was born at Norwich, England, came to Australia with his father, an actor/manager, in 1857, and made his first appearance on the stage when he was six years old. He was educated at the Church of England grammar school, Brighton, Victoria, and at the Otago boys' high school, Dunedin, New Zealand. Holt returned to England aged 14 years and became a professional actor. He had experience in England, the United States and New Zealand, before establishing himself in Australia in 1876. ''Possum Paddock'' is a 1921 Australian film based on a popular play by Kate Howarde. It was the first Australian feature film to be directed by a woman. Only portions of it survive today. Plot Andrew "Dad" McQuade (John Cosgrove), a tough farmer, faces ruin because of a bank loan he cannot repay. He decides to sell a fifty-acre field called 'Possum Paddock' to his greedy neighbour, Dan Martin (James Martin). However, Hugh Bracken (Jack Kirby), who is dating McQuade's daughter, Nancy (Leslie Adrien), sells his car to pay off the old man's debts. He then discovers that a railway is to go through the paddock and is worth a fortune. AusStage: The Australian Live Performance Database is an online database which records information about live performances in Australia, providing records of productions from the first recorded performance in Australia (1789, by convicts) up until the present day. The only repository of Australian performing arts in the world, it is managed by a consortium of universities, government agencies, industry organisations and arts institutions, and mostly funded by the Australian Research Council. The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA), known as ScreenSound Australia from 1999 to 2004, is Australia's audiovisual archive, responsible for developing, preserving, maintaining, promoting and providing access to a national collection of film, television, sound, radio, video games, new media, and related documents and artefacts. The collection ranges from works created in the late nineteenth century when the recorded sound and film industries were in their infancy, to those made in the present day. The NFSA collection first started as the National Historical Film and Speaking Record Library (within the then Commonwealth National Library) in 1935, becoming an independent cultural organisation in 1984. ''Sunshine Sally'' is a 1922 Australian silent film directed by Lawson Harris set in the Sydney suburb of Woolloomooloo. Most of the movie survives today. Plot Sal and Tottie are sacked from their jobs in a laundry, then go on a picnic with friends Skinny and Spud. Skinny and Spud are both romantically interested in Sal but she spurns their attentions. Sal is rescued in the surf Coogee Beach by wealthy lifeguard Basil Stanton and taken to his family home in Potts Point to recuperate. Sal and Basil fall in love and get married. Spud and Skinny are arrested for drunkenness and reform. Spud marries Tottie and Skinny marries a woman from the Salvation Army. ''The Gentleman Bushranger'' is a 1921 Australian film melodrama from director Beaumont Smith. Bushranging films were banned at the time but Smith got around this by making the plot about a man falsely accused of being a bushranger. Plot In 1857, an Englishman, Richard Lavender (Ernest Hearne), is travelling to Australia on a ship where he meets the beautiful Kitty Aronson. He is falsely accused by Peter Dargin ( Tal Ordell) of murdering the ship's captain and is arrested. With the escape of an aboriginal friend, he escapes into the bush where he becomes a gold prospector. He meets Kitty, who runs a nearby selection, and they happily mine gold together until Dargin arrives and frames him for bushranger crimes. However Lavender ultimately proves his innocence. His younger brother Dick (Robert MacKinnon) is being blackmailed by the evil Tessie (Lorna Lantaur) into stealing money. Bob takes the blame to protect his brother. ''The Queen of Sheba'' (1921) is a silent drama film produced by Fox studios about the story of the ill-fated romance between Solomon, King of Israel, and the Queen of Sheba. Written and directed by J. Gordon Edwards, it starred Betty Blythe as the Queen and Fritz Leiber Sr. as King Solomon. The film is well known amongst silent film buffs for the risqué costumes worn by Blythe, as evidenced by several surviving stills taken during the production. Only a short fragment of the film survives. Cast Production The film was originally intended for Theda Bara. However Bara chose not to renew her contract and, after making the ill-fated '' Kathleen Mavourneen'', she all but retired from filmmaking. While making ''Mavourneen,'' construction began on sets for ''The Queen of Sheba.'' Not wanting it to go to waste, William Fox chose to put Betty Blythe in the role. Plot Australian Stephen Manners (Cyril Mackay) travels to New Zealand and has sex with a Māori girl. He goes home and she dies giving birth to their daughter, Iwa. Iwa is raised by her grandfather Hauraki (Mita), who explains to Manners what happens when he returns to New Zealand twenty years later. Manners takes Iwa (now played by Stella Southern) back to Sydney, Australia, but does not tell her that he is her father. Travelling with Manners is John Barris (John Cosgrove), whom Hauraki tells on his deathbed that Iwa's real father is a missionary, not Manners.
