The band-bellied crake (''Zapornia paykullii'') is a species of bird in the family Rallidae. It breeds in Manchuria, eastern China and northern Korea ; it winters throughout Southeast Asia. It is getting rare due to habitat loss. In 1813 the Swedish taxon author Sven Ingemar Ljungh named the bird after the naturalist Gustaf von Paykull. Sven Ingemar Ljungh
Sven Ingemar Ljungh, also spelled Liungh (5 June 1757, Björkö, Jönköping County – 12 September 1828, Bälaryd, Jönköping County) was a Swedish civil servant, naturalist and collector. During his schooling in Jönköping, he was a private student of the lexicographer Håkan Sjögren from whom he learned the Latin language. At high school in Växjö, he received a good education in botany. He attended the gymnasium in Växjö and went to Uppsala in 1775, graduating in 1777 with a degree in theology. He then started to study medicine but fell ill to malaria. After recovery he joined the civil services. He took up a position in the Swedish civil service as a clerk in the judicial system and in 1778 became the Deputy Crown Bailiff in North and South Vedbo. He took an interest in natural history and was a visitor to the home of Carolus Linnaeus and was taught briefly by Linnaeus the younger. The rails, or Rallidae, are a large cosmopolitan family of small- to medium-sized, ground-living birds. The family exhibits considerable diversity and includes the crakes, coots, and gallinules. Gustav von Paykull (21 August 1757 – 28 January 1826) was a Sweden, Swedish'' friherre'' (circa baron) and Marshal of the Court (Sweden), Marshal of the Court, ornithologist, and entomologist. He was a member of the Royal Swedish Academy from 1791 and a founder of the natural history museum (Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet) in Stockholm, through his 1819 donation of his extensive Zoological specimens, zoological collections to the academy (now in the Swedish Museum of Natural History). ''Zapornia'' is a genus of birds in the rail family Rallidae. Taxonomy The genus ''Zapornia'' was introduced in 1816 by the English zoologist William Elford Leach in a catalogue of animals in the British Museum. He included a single species, the little crake which is therefore the type species. The genus name is an anagram of the genus ''Porzana'' that was introduced by the French ornithologist Louis-Pierre Vieillot.
