Portuguese Church (Mumbai)
The Church of Our Lady of Salvation, popularly referred to as ''Portuguese Church'', is one of the oldest churches in Mumbai (formerly Bombay), India. It is located on S. K. Bole Road in Dadar. The church was originally built by the Portuguese Franciscans who called it ''Nossa Senhora da Salvação''. The present structure, designed by famous Indian architect Charles Correa, was constructed between 1974 and 1977. History The church of Our Lady of Salvation is believed by historians to be the city's oldest church, having existed as early as 1512. It was built by the Portuguese Franciscan Missionaries. Dadar
Dadar ( ̪aːd̪əɾ is a densely populated residential and shopping neighbourhood in Mumbai. It is also a prominent railway and bus service hub with local and national connectivity. Dadar holds the distinction of being Mumbai’s first planned area, and is a hub for the city's Marathi culture. It includes the Dadar West area. Charles Mark Correa (1 September 1930 – 16 June 2015) was an Indian architect and urban planner. Credited with the creation of modern architecture in post-Independent India, he was celebrated for his sensitivity to the needs of the urban poor and for his use of traditional methods and materials. Biography Early life Charles Correa, a Roman Catholic of Goan descent, was born on 1 September 1930 in Secunderabad. He began his higher studies at St. Xavier's College, Mumbai. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Bombay is a particular church celebrating the Latin Rite of worship, centred in the Bombay (Mumbai) city of the northern Konkan division of Maharashtra, India. The archdiocese has been a Metropolitan see since its elevation, by Pope Leo XIII on 1 September 1886. The seat of the Episcopal See is the Cathedral of the Holy Name (Bombay).
