Porter, New York
Porter is a town in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 6,771 at the 2010 census. The town was named after Judge Augustus Porter. The Town of Porter lies in the northwest corner of Niagara County and is north of the City of Niagara Falls. History For thousands of years, the area was inhabited by various cultures of indigenous peoples. At the time of European encounter, this was the territory of the powerful Iroquois Confederacy, based in present-day New York state. Permanent European-American settlement did not take place until after the American Revolution, about 1801, after most of the Iroquois had been forced to cede their lands to New York and had emigrated across the Niagara River to Upper Canada. The Town of Porter was created in 1812 from the Town of Cambria, but further development was hindered by the War of 1812. Cambria is a town in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 5,839 at the 2010 census. Cambria is an early name for Wales. The Town of Cambria is in the center of Niagara County. The town was named after an early settler, Reuben Wilson, who built and dwelt in a log cabin on the shore of Lake Ontario at the site of what would become the Village of Wilson. William Hawley (general)
William A. Hawley (August 19, 1824January 15, 1873) was a career United States Army officer, who served in the Mexican–American War and the American Civil War. During the Civil War, he commanded the 3rd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment and received an honorary brevet to the rank of brigadier general. Biography Hawley was born on August 19, 1824, in Porter, New York. He lived in Lockport, New York, before moving to Madison, Wisconsin, in 1854. Career Hawley originally served in the United States Army during the Mexican–American War, where he achieved the rank of sergeant. He was discharged after the end of the war. After the outbreak of the American Civil War, Hawley was commissioned an officer in the Union Army and helped to organized the 3rd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. Oliver Dyer
Oliver Dyer (April 26, 1824 – January 13, 1907) was an American journalist, author, teacher, lawyer and stenographer. A pioneer in phonography, he developed his own shorthand system which was the first to be adopted for use in the United States. It was used not only for courtroom testimony but also for recording political events such as the Free Soil Convention in Buffalo, New York, and sessions of the 30th United States Congress in Washington, D.C., in 1848. It was in the latter role that he became the first Congressional shorthand reporter.
