Playa Mayabeque
Playa Mayabeque (Mayabeque Beach) is a location in the southern part of Mayabeque Province, within 15 kilometers of Melena del Sur on the southern shore of Cuba. The waters are muddy, to which local people attribute therapeutic properties. In the beach it is located the old outlet of the Mayabeque River ("Antiguo Mayabeque"), the most important river in the former Havana province, which gave its name to the new province of Mayabeque established in 2011. Mayabeque River
Mayabeque River (alternately ''Rio Mayabeque'') ( es, Río Mayabeque) is a river of western Cuba, considered the largest in the southwestern watershed of Cuba, with an extensive fluvial network that encompasses the municipalities of Güines, San Jose de las Lajas, Jaruco, Madruga, and Melena del Sur. The old outlet in Melena del Sur (now connected with the main river only by irrigation canals) is named ''Antiguo Mayabeque''. Surgidero De Batabanó
Surgidero de Batabanó, also shortened as Surgidero, is a Cuban village and ''consejo popular'' ("people's council", i.e. hamlet) of the municipality of Batabanó, in Mayabeque Province. In 2011 it had a population of about 6,000. History The village was officially founded on February 5, 1688. Batabanó is a municipality and town in the Mayabeque Province of Cuba. It was founded in 1688. History Until the 1977 administrative reform, the municipality was divided into the barrios of Pueblo de Batabanó, Surgidero, Camacho, Pozo Redondo, La Julia and Sopapo. Geography The municipality is crossed by a number of small rivers, among them Río Guanabo, Río San Felipe, Río Pacheco, Río San Juan and Río Santa Gertrudis. San José de las Lajas is a municipality and the capital city of the newly formed Mayabeque Province of Cuba, after the segmentation of La Habana Province in 2011. It is located in the center north of the province, and is bisected by the Carretera Central. It was founded in 1778. Güines
Güines is a municipality and town in the Mayabeque Province of Cuba. It is located southeast of Havana, next to the Mayabeque River. It is the most populated town, but not the capital, of its province. History The city was founded in 1737 by the Spanish. Prior to the arrival of the Spanish, what is now Güines was part of a region ruled by the Indian chief Habaguanex. One of the earliest mentions of the word Güines is in 1598, when Don Diego de Rivera or Ribera was awarded a land grant for ''Los Güines Corral''. Güines can be considered one of the primary points of Cuba's transformation into a sugar-producing slave society in the wake of the Haitian Revolution. Its demographics radically changed as a result.
