Héritage
Héritage was a banner of discount grocery stores owned by Provigo to market smaller supermarkets in Quebec. Launched in February 1982 by Provigo, the first store was located on 3565 Taschereau Boulevard in Saint-Hubert, Quebec. The size of a typical Héritage outlet was between that of a traditional supermarket and a Maxi store. Héritage carried less products but offered bigger discounts than its sister chain Maxi. Like Maxi, Héritage stores were company-owned in contrast to the Provigo-branded locations that tended to be franchisees. As such, several of the Steinberg's locations that the company Provigo acquired in 1992 were transferred to its Héritage chain. Steinberg's (renamed Steinberg in 1961) was a large family-owned Canadian grocery store chain that mainly operated in the province of Quebec and later Ontario. In addition to its flagship supermarket chain, the company operated several subsidiaries across the country. The company went bankrupt in 1992, three years after being sold to private interests, after 75 years in business. Woolco was an American-based discount retail chain. It was founded in 1962 in Columbus, Ohio, by the F. W. Woolworth Company. It was a full-line discount department store unlike the five-and-dime Woolworth stores which operated at the time. At its peak, Woolco had hundreds of stores in the US, as well as in Canada and the United Kingdom. Zellers
Zellers was a Canadian discount department retail chain and is currently a brand name owned by the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC). Founded in 1931 in London, Ontario, in later decades it was based in Brampton, Ontario. Zellers was acquired by HBC in 1978 before closing in 2013. A series of acquisitions and expansions allowed Zellers to reach its peak in the 1990s, with 350 stores across the country in 1999.
