Billy Talagi
Billy Graham Talagi is a Niuean politician and former Member of the Niue Assembly. Career Talagi was first elected to the Niue Assembly in a 1997 by-election. He has represented the village of Avatele in the Niue Assembly continuously since 1999. In 2005, 2008, and 2014 he was elected unopposed. In 2014 he was made Minister of Natural Resources in the Cabinet of Toke Talagi. In 2017 he was made Minister for Education and Social Services. In 2019 he served as Acting Prime Minister while Toke Talagi was receiving medical treatment in New Zealand. In May 2018 Talagi was discharged without conviction after pleading guilty to assaulting MP Terry Coe outside the Niuean Assembly. He contested the common roll in the 2020 Niuean general election but failed to win a seat. Niue
Niue (, ; niu, Niuē) is an island country in the South Pacific Ocean, northeast of New Zealand. Niue's land area is about and its population, predominantly Polynesian, was about 1,600 in 2016. Niue Assembly
The Niue Assembly ( niu, Niue Fono Ekepule) is the legislature of Niue. It consists of 20 members; 14 representatives of the villages and 6 elected on a common roll. Members are directly elected by universal suffrage, and serve a three-year term. Niue follows the Westminster system of government, with the Premier elected by the Assembly and the Cabinet drawn from it. History The Assembly is descended from the Island Council established under the Cook Islands Act 1915. This was disbanded in 1959 and reconstituted as the Assembly, which was successively granted greater control. 2020 Niuean General Election
General elections were held in Niue on 30 May 2020 for the 20 members of the Niue Assembly. The election resulted in the defeat of Premier Toke Talagi, who lost his seat. Fifteen incumbents were re-elected, including three who were unopposed. In Mutalu, a tie between two candidates resulted in one being elected by a coin toss. Following the elections the Assembly elected Dalton Tagelagi as Premier. Atapana Siakimotu
Atapana Siakimotu ( – 2022) was a Niuean politician, diplomat, and public servant. He served as the speaker of the Niuean Assembly between 2002 and 2011. Biography Siakimotu was educated at Lincoln College in New Zealand, graduating with a diploma in horticulture. He previously worked as principal of Niue High School, director of education, and as consul-general to New Zealand. He was appointed speaker of the assembly after the 2002 election, and was re-appointed in 2005 and 2008. In April 2011, he announced that he would retire at the 2011 election, after serving nine years as speaker. He later served as chair of the Niue Public Service Commission. Avatele
Avatele, formerly known as Oneonepata Matavaihala, is one of the fourteen villages of Niue, located on the southwest coast, with a population of 143 residents as of 2017. Geography Avatele Beach, the village's main sea track, stretches along the coast of Avatele Bay and is the largest and most well-known beach on the island. Although the sand is mostly of the coarse kind it is an important swimming and picnic site for both tourists and residents. Prior to the construction of the Sir Robert Rex Wharf and Hannan International Airport in Alofi, Avatele Beach was the principal landing place for many visitors to the island. General elections were held in Niue on 29 April 2023. The elections were originally planned to be held early, in late February or early March. Eight new MPs and six women were elected. Following the elections the Assembly elected Dalton Tagelagi as Premier. Electoral system The 20 members of the Assembly are elected by two methods; 14 are elected from single-member consistencies using first-past-the-post voting and six are elected from a single nationwide constituency by multiple non-transferable vote. There are currently no political parties. After the election, the Members of the Assembly elect a Speaker of the Assembly from outside parliament, and a Premier, who must be an MP. The Premier then chooses a Cabinet. In 2023, the candidate nomination fee was increased from NZ$11 to NZ$200.
