Niue Assembly
The Niue Assembly ( niu, Niue Fono Ekepule) is the legislature of Niue. It consists of 20 members; 14 representatives of the villages and 6 elected on a common roll. Members are directly elected by universal suffrage, and serve a three-year term. Niue follows the Westminster system of government, with the Premier elected by the Assembly and the Cabinet drawn from it. History The Assembly is descended from the Island Council established under the Cook Islands Act 1915. This was disbanded in 1959 and reconstituted as the Assembly, which was successively granted greater control. The Assembly assumed full law-making power within the constitution upon self-government in 1974. The Assembly is physically located in Alofi. Mititaiagimene Young Vivian is a Niuean politician and diplomat, who served as Premier of Niue twice, the first time from December 1992 to March 1993 following the death of Sir Robert Rex, and the second from 2002 to 2008. He also served as a Cabinet Minister multiple times, first as Minister of Education, Economic Development and Agriculture and later as Minister of Finance under Robert Rex, and in the Cabinet of Sani Lakatani. Mona Ainuu is a Niuean politician and Cabinet Minister. Dion Paki Taufitu is a Niuean politician and Cabinet Minister. Taufitu formerly served as clerk of the Niue Assembly. He was first elected to the Assembly at the 1990 Niuean general election. He was re-elected at the 1996 election. Jack Willie Lipitoa (born ) is a Niuean politician and former Member of the Niue Assembly. He is the older brother of former Cabinet Minister Enetama Lipitoa. Lipitoa worked as a teacher, first at Matalave and then at Niue High School. He was first elected to the Niuean Assembly at the 1987 Niuean general election, replacing his brother who had moved to a seat on the common roll. He has been re-elected at every election since.
