Dion Taufitu
Dion Paki Taufitu is a Niuean politician and Cabinet Minister. Taufitu formerly served as clerk of the Niue Assembly. He was first elected to the Assembly at the 1990 Niuean general election. He was re-elected at the 1996 election. He was re-elected at the 1999 election and appointed Minister of Administrative Services, Public Works, Agriculture, Fisheries, Forestry, Employment, and Broadcasting in the government of Sani Lakatani. He was re-elected at the 2002 election, but lost his seat at the 2005 election on a hat-draw. He was re-elected to the Assembly at the 2008 Niuean general election. He was re-elected in the 2011 election, but was in New Zealand for medical treatment when it was time to be sworn in. Speaker of the Assembly Ahohiva Levi travelled to Auckland and privately administered the oath of office there, but the validity of the process was challenged by common roll MP Togia Sioneholo. Sani Lakatani
Sani Elia Lagigietama Lakatani (born 1936) is a former Premier of Niue. He was a member of the Niue People's Party. Early life Lakatani served in the New Zealand Army as a corporal. He was deployed to Vietnam as part of the Whiskey2 deployment. Political career Early career He was first elected to the Niue Assembly in the 1990 election as a candidate for Young Vivian's Niue People's Action Party (NPAP). On election night the NPAP believed it had a majority, but a leadership dispute between Vivian and Lakatani saw a group of MP's led by the latter switch sides to support Premier Robert Rex, who was elected on a 12–8 vote. Lakatani was appointed to Rex's Cabinet as Minister of Finance, but was sacked just five months later after circulating a petition calling for a change of leadership. 2012 Toi By-election
A by-election was held in the village of Toi, in Niue, on 31 March 2012. A general election was held in Niue on 7 May 2011. The island of Niue is one of the smallest self-governing nations in the world; it has an approximate population of 1,400, and a national Assembly of twenty members. Six of those are elected on an island-wide roll, while the other fourteen are elected from single-member village constituencies. There are no political parties. The electoral system in the constituencies is the first past the post system. In the 2011 election, eighteen voters cast a ballot for the constituency seat of Toi; incumbent candidate Dion Taufitu was reelected with an absolute majority of votes (11 votes; 61.1%). When the newly elected Assembly convened for members to take the oath of office, however, Taufitu was ill in Auckland.
