Zephyranthes Carinata 2020
''Zephyranthes'' is a genus of temperate and tropical plants in the Amaryllis family, subfamily Amaryllidoideae, native to the Western Hemisphere and widely cultivated as ornamentals. Following the expansion of the genus in 2019, which now includes the genera ''Habranthus'' and ''Sprekelia'', there are about 200 recognized species, as well as numerous hybrids and cultivars. Common names for species in this genus include fairy lily, rainflower, zephyr lily, magic lily, Atamasco lily, and rain lily. The name is derived from Ζέφυρος (''Zephyrus''), the Greek god of the west wind, and ἄνθος (''anthos''), meaning flower, referring to the slender stalks. Description Species in the genus which are listed in this article vary in morphology. Along with floral morphology, characteristics such as bulb size, bulb tunic color, and leaf morphology help identify individual species. Foliage in the wild is often ephemeral, but under cultivation becomes more persistent. ...

Common Name
In biology, a common name of a taxon or organism (also known as a vernacular name, English name, colloquial name, country name, popular name, or farmer's name) is a name that is based on the normal language of everyday life; and is often contrasted with the scientific name for the same organism, which is Latinized. A common name is sometimes frequently used, but that is not always the case. In chemistry, IUPAC defines a common name as one that, although it unambiguously defines a chemical, does not follow the current systematic naming convention, such as acetone, systematically 2-propanone, while a vernacular name describes one used in a lab, trade or industry that does not unambiguously describe a single chemical, such as copper sulfate, which may refer to either copper(I) sulfate or copper(II) sulfate. Sometimes common names are created by authorities on one particular subject, in an attempt to make it possible for members of the general public (including such interested par ...

Species
In biology, a species is the basic unit of classification and a taxonomic rank of an organism, as well as a unit of biodiversity. A species is often defined as the largest group of organisms in which any two individuals of the appropriate sexes or mating types can produce fertile offspring, typically by sexual reproduction. Other ways of defining species include their karyotype, DNA sequence, morphology, behaviour or ecological niche. In addition, paleontologists use the concept of the chronospecies since fossil reproduction cannot be examined. The most recent rigorous estimate for the total number of species of eukaryotes is between 8 and 8.7 million. However, only about 14% of these had been described by 2011. All species (except viruses) are given a two-part name, a "binomial". The first part of a binomial is the genus to which the species belongs. The second part is called the specific name or the specific epithet (in botanical nomenclature, also sometimes i ...

Genera
Genus ( plural genera ) is a taxonomic rank used in the biological classification of living and fossil organisms as well as viruses. In the hierarchy of biological classification, genus comes above species and below family. In binomial nomenclature, the genus name forms the first part of the binomial species name for each species within the genus. :E.g. ''Panthera leo'' (lion) and ''Panthera onca'' (jaguar) are two species within the genus '' Panthera''. ''Panthera'' is a genus within the family Felidae. The composition of a genus is determined by taxonomists. The standards for genus classification are not strictly codified, so different authorities often produce different classifications for genera. There are some general practices used, however, including the idea that a newly defined genus should fulfill these three criteria to be descriptively useful: # monophyly – all descendants of an ancestral taxon are grouped together (i.e. phylogenetic analysis should clearly demons ...

Habranthus
''Habranthus'' (copperlily) was a formerly recognized genus of tender herbaceous flowering bulbs in the subfamily Amaryllidoideae of the family Amaryllidaceae. It is now included within a more broadly circumscribed genus ''Zephyranthes''. The genus was first identified by pioneering bulb enthusiast William Herbert in 1824. Taxonomy ''Habranthus'' was formerly regarded separate from ''Zephyranthes''; distinctive features included holding its flowers at an angle rather than upright, and possessing unequal stamens. At one stage, ''Habranthus'' was considered a subgenus of the closely related ''Hippeastrum''. It was later treated as a full genus in the tribe Hippeastreae. However, molecular phylogenetic studies from 2000 onwards showed that although Hippeastreae was monophyletic, many of the genera placed in the tribe were not; in particular, ''Habranthus'', ''Zephyranthes'' and ''Sprekelia'' formed a complex in which traditionally placed species were intermingled. Accordingly, in 20 ...

Zephyranthes Carinata
''Zephyranthes carinata'', commonly known as the rosepink zephyr lily or pink rain lily, is a perennial flowering plant native to Mexico, Colombia and Central America. It is also widely cultivated as an ornamental and naturalized in the West Indies, Peru, Argentina, Brazil, the southeastern United States from Texas to Florida, Zimbabwe, South Africa, China, Korea, the Ryukyu Islands, Assam, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Solomon Islands, Queensland, Society Islands, Kiribati, and Caroline Islands. ''Zephyranthes carinata'' has large bright pink flowers, around , and green strap-like leaves. They are found naturally in moist, open areas, often near woodlands. Like other rain lilies, their common name refers to their habit of blooming soon after a heavy rainfall. They are widely grown in gardens as annuals and as container plants, although they will overwinter in warm climates. ''Zephyranthes carinata'' are often incorrectly referred to as ''Zephyranthes grandiflora'', especially in ...

Zephyranthes Minuta
''Zephyranthes minuta'' is a plant species very often referred to as ''Zephyranthes grandiflora'', including in Flora of North America. The latter is, however, an illegitimate name because the original author in coining the name ''Zephyranthes grandiflora'' listed the older name ''Amaryllis minuta'' as a synonym. This makes "''minuta''" the acceptable epithet under the ICN. In the UK it is a recipient of the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. Description ''Zephyranthes minuta'' is a bulb-forming perennial with shiny green leaves up to 7 mm wide. Flowers in wild specimens are usually pink, funnel-shaped, up to 9 cm long. Cultivated specimens are frequently larger, often with extra tepals. Distribution ''Zephyranthes minuta'' is native to Mexico and Guatemala but widely cultivated as an ornamental and reportedly naturalized in Hawaii, the Andaman Islands, the islands of the Southwestern Caribbean (belonging to Colombia, Nicaragua and Honduras), an ...

Zephyranthes Rosea
''Zephyranthes rosea'', commonly known as the Cuban zephyrlily, rosy rain lily, rose fairy lily, rose zephyr lily or the pink rain lily, is a species of rain lily native to Peru and Colombia. They are widely cultivated as ornamentals and have become naturalized in tropical regions worldwide. Like all rain lilies, they are known for blooming only after heavy rains. They contain potentially lethal toxins. Description ''Zephyranthes rosea'' are perennial herbaceous monocots. They are small plants, reaching only in height. They bear five to six narrow and flattened dark green linear leaves, about wide, from spherical tunicate bulbs around in diameter. The single funnel-shaped flowers are borne erect or slightly inclined on scapes around long. The spathes are around long and slightly divided only at the tip. The fragrant six-petaled flowers are around in diameter and in length. The perianth is bright pink with a green central perianth tube that is less than long. T ...
