Pinay Ballers League, abbreviated as ''PBL'', is a women's basketball league based in the Philippines. Ewon Arayi
Merenciana "Ewon" Arayi (born November 5, 1985) is a Filipino former basketball player, who has served as the longest-tenured player and team captain of the Philippines women's national basketball team (Perlas Pilipinas, formerly Discovery Perlas) since the SEABA Championships in 2007. She is also the founder and president of the pioneering women's basketball league in the Philippines, the Pinay Ballers League and a member of Athletes in Action Christian ministry. Playing career Arayi was five months old when her father Gabriel, a criminology graduate went to Lagos to become a policeman. He returned to the Philippines when she was 16 years old. Philippines Women's National Basketball Team
The Philippines women's national basketball team is managed by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP). Compared to the men's national team, the women's national team receives less reception from local basketball enthusiasts. Locally based players has no national league to play in after college which has a few leagues such as the WNCAA, Filoil Premier Cup, and Fr. Martin's Cup. The Philippine Basketball League (PBL) was a commercial semi-professional basketball league in the Philippines. The league was composed of several commercial teams with several collegiate and provincial stars. History The PBL was formed on May 6, 1983, a brainchild of San Miguel Corporation chairman Danding Cojuangco, under its original name the Philippine Amateur Basketball League (PABL). It was the successor of the defunct Manila Industrial and Commercial Athletic Association (MICAA), which folded during the early-1980s. During the inaugural PABL tournament, 37 teams divided into four divisions from collegiate and commercial ranks participated in the tournament that was played in the historic Rizal Memorial Coliseum. Basketball is the most popular sport in the Philippines, played on both the amateur and professional levels. History Basketball was introduced in the Philippines during the American colonial period with the first American teachers teaching the sport along with baseball through the YMCA and the school system.
