Benton County is one of the 36 counties in the U.S. state of Oregon. As of the 2020 census, the population was 95,184. Its county seat is Corvallis. The county was named after Thomas Hart Benton, a U.S. Senator who advocated American control over the Oregon Country. Philomath ( ) is a city in Benton County, Oregon, United States. It was named for Philomath (Greek, "love of learning") College. The population was 4,584 at the 2010 census and was most recently estimated in 2019 to have a population of 5,666. It is part of the Corvallis, Oregon, Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Philomath was named after the Philomath College that was founded in 1867 by the United Brethren Church. The name of the college and city was derived from two Greek words meaning "lover of learning". The city was incorporated on October 20, 1882. The college closed in 1929 due to a dramatic decline in enrollment. Geography Philomath is west of Corvallis on U.S. Route 20. Blodgett is a census-designated place (CDP) and unincorporated community in Benton County, Oregon, United States, where Oregon Route 180 meets U.S. Route 20 in the Central Oregon Coast Range west of Corvallis. It is near the confluence of the Tumtum and Marys rivers. As of the 2010 census, the community had a population of 58. Blodgett was named for pioneer settler William Blodgett. The post office was established in April 1888 with the name "Emrick", for a local family, and was changed to Blodgett shortly thereafter. Its ZIP code is 97326. Philomath High School is a public high school in Philomath, Oregon, United States. Academics In 2016, 90.9% of the school's seniors received their high school diplomas. In 2019, 100% of the school's 119 seniors received their high school diploma. Clemens Grant The Clemens Foundation was established in 1958 by Rex and Ethel Clemens, members of the Philomath community who acquired their wealth in the timber industry. The foundation was established to provide funding for Philomath-area schools, including a college scholarship fund set up for graduates of Philomath High School.
