Philip Martin (screenwriter)
Philip Martin (3 July 1938 – 13 December 2020) was an English television screenwriter. He created the BBC television drama series ''Gangsters'' in the 1970s and later wrote two television serials for ''Doctor Who'' during Colin Baker's tenure as the Sixth Doctor in the 1980s. Career His early work included regular series such as ''Z-Cars'' in the late 1960s/early 1970s, but his most famous work is the postmodern television series ''Gangsters''. This was an examination of race seen through an increasingly surreal vision of Birmingham's criminal underworld. Beginning as an acclaimed one-off edition of ''Play for Today'' in 1975, it was followed by two series of 6 episodes each in 1976 and 1978. Martin appeared in the series in several roles, including as himself. ''Virtual Murder'' was an unusual investigative drama series shown on BBC television in 1992. It starred Nicholas Clay as Dr John Cornelius, a psychology lecturer at a provincial university, and Kim Thomson as his vivacious, ginger partner, Samantha Valentine. Subject matter and cast ''Virtual Murder'' was in the mould of some earlier off-beat series, such as '' The Avengers'' and ''Adam Adamant Lives!'', both shown in the 1960s. Target Books was a British publishing imprint, established in 1973 by Universal-Tandem Publishing Co Ltd, a paperback publishing company. The imprint was established as a children's imprint to complement the adult Tandem imprint, and became well known for their highly successful range of novelisations and other assorted books based on the popular science fiction television series ''Doctor Who''. Sil is a fictional alien from the television series '' Doctor Who'', first appeared in the 1985 serial ''Vengeance on Varos''. Sil was portrayed by Nabil Shaban. Overview Sil was the representative of the Galatron Mining Corporation present on the planet Varos to extract concessions from the current Governor. Unbeknownst to the Varosians, the mineral Zeiton-7 which was abundant on their planet was not as they thought nearly valueless, but in fact rare, particularly to time travellers. ''Mission to Magnus'' is a story originally written to be part of the unfilmed 1986 season of ''Doctor Who''. The twenty-third season of British science fiction television series ''Doctor Who'', known collectively as ''The Trial of a Time Lord'', aired in weekly episodes from 6 September to 6 December 1986.
