Philip J. Davis
Philip J. Davis (January 2, 1923 – March 14, 2018) was an American academic Applied mathematics, applied mathematician. Davis was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He was known for his work in numerical analysis and approximation theory, as well as his investigations in the History of mathematics, history and philosophy of mathematics. He earned his degrees in mathematics from Harvard University (SB, 1943; PhD, 1950, advisor Ralph P. Boas, Jr.), and his final position was Professor Emeritus at the Division of Applied Mathematics at Brown University. He served briefly in an aerodynamics research position in the United States Air Force, Air Force in World War II before joining the National Bureau of Standards (now the National Institute of Standards and Technology). He became Chief of Numerical Analysis there and worked on the well-known Abramowitz and Stegun ''Handbook of Mathematical Functions'' before joining Brown in 1963. Philip Rabinowitz (August 14, 1926 – July 21, 2006) was an American and Israeli applied mathematician. He was best known for his work in numerical analysis, including his books ''A First Course in Numerical Analysis'' with Anthony Ralston and ''Methods of Numerical Integration'' with Philip J. Davis. He was the author of numerous articles on numerical computation. He earned his Ph.D. in 1951 under Walter Gottschalk at the University of Pennsylvania. The history of mathematics deals with the origin of discoveries in mathematics and the mathematical methods and notation of the past. Reuben Hersh
Reuben Hersh (December 9, 1927 – January 3, 2020) was an American mathematician and academic, best known for his writings on the nature, practice, and social impact of mathematics. Although he was generally known as Reuben Hersh, late in life he sometimes used the name Reuben Laznovsky in recognition of his father's ancestral family name. His work challenges and complements mainstream philosophy of mathematics. Education After receiving a B.A. in English literature from Harvard University in 1946, Hersh spent a decade writing for ''Scientific American'' and working as a machinist. Theodorus Of Cyrene
Theodorus of Cyrene ( el, Θεόδωρος ὁ Κυρηναῖος) was an ancient Greek mathematician who lived during the 5th century BC. The only first-hand accounts of him that survive are in three of Plato's dialogues: the '' Theaetetus'', the ''Sophist'', and the ''Statesman''. In the former dialogue, he posits a mathematical theorem now known as the Spiral of Theodorus. Life Little is known as Theodorus' biography beyond what can be inferred from Plato's dialogues. He was born in the northern African colony of Cyrene, and apparently taught both there and in Athens. He complains of old age in the ''Theaetetus'', the dramatic date of 399 BC of which suggests his period of flourishing to have occurred in the mid-5th century.
