Petersen Island is a largest and most northerly island of the Jocelyn Islands in Holme Bay, Mac. Robertson Land, and is situated just east of Verner Island, Lee Island, and Kista Strait, and just south of Moller Bank and Carstens Shoal. Island

Jocelyn Islands
The Jocelyn Islands are a group of islands lying between the Flat Islands and the Rouse Islands in the eastern part of Holme Bay, Mac. Robertson Land, Antarctica. The group, which is made up (going west-to-east) the Lee Island, Verner Island, and Petersen Island, were mapped by Norwegian cartographers from air photos taken by the Lars Christensen Expedition, 1936–37, and named Meholmane (the middle islands). They were renamed in 1960 by Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) for Jocelyn Terry, who for a number of years broadcast news and messages to Antarctica from Radio Australia. Holme Bay
Holme Bay is a bay in Antarctica in Mac. Robertson Land, wide, containing many islands, indenting the coast north of the Framnes Mountains. Holme Bay is largely snow-free and was mapped by Norwegian cartographers from aerial photographs taken by the Lars Christensen Expedition in January-February 1937, and named Holmevika because of its island-studded character ('' holme'' means "islet" in Norwegian) . Antarctic Names Committee Of Australia
The Australian Antarctic Names and Medals Committee (AANMC) was established to advise the Government on names for features in the Australian Antarctic Territory and the subantarctic territory of Heard Island and the McDonald Islands. The committee also issues nominations Governor General for the award of the Australian Antarctic Medal. Committee members were appointed by the Minister or Parliamentary Secretary responsible for Antarctic matters. The committee was founded in 1952 as the Antarctic Names Committee of Australia, and changed to the current name in 1982 to reflect the multiple functions that the committee is responsible for.
