Verner Island
Verner Island is one of the Jocelyn Islands, lying just west of Petersen Island, just east of Lee Island and Kista Strait, and just south of Moller Bank and Carstens Shoal, in Holme Bay, Mac. Robertson Land. It was mapped by Norwegian cartographers from air photos taken by the Lars Christensen Expedition, 1936–37, and remapped by ANARE (Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions) in 1956. Jocelyn Islands
The Jocelyn Islands are a group of islands lying between the Flat Islands and the Rouse Islands in the eastern part of Holme Bay, Mac. Robertson Land, Antarctica. The group, which is made up (going west-to-east) the Lee Island, Verner Island, and Petersen Island, were mapped by Norwegian cartographers from air photos taken by the Lars Christensen Expedition, 1936–37, and named Meholmane (the middle islands). They were renamed in 1960 by Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) for Jocelyn Terry, who for a number of years broadcast news and messages to Antarctica from Radio Australia. Holme Bay is a bay in Antarctica in Mac. Robertson Land, wide, containing many islands, indenting the coast north of the Framnes Mountains. The Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE ) is the historical name for the Australian Antarctic Program (AAp) administered for Australia by the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD). History Australia has had a long involvement in south polar regions since as early as Douglas Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition in 1911.
