Peter Frederik Wulff
Peter Frederik (Friderich) Wulff (26 November 1774–2 February 1842) was a Danish naval officer. He headed the Royal Danish Naval Academy from 1824 to 1841. Wulff, his wife Henriette Wulf, and several of his children were loyal friends and supporters of the writer Hans Christian Andersen. Early life Wulff was born on 26 November 1774 in Copenhagen, the son of first lieutenant and later commander Frederik Christian Wulff (1749–1812) and Kirstine Johansen (1755–1829). He was the elder brother of Christian Wulff. Career Wulff enrolled as a voluntary cadet in 1780 and became a cadet in 1788. He was awarded Gerner's medal in 1793 and became a second lieutenant in 1794. In 1797–98, he visited the Danish West Indies on board the frigate ''Iris''. In 1799 he became a first lieutenant. Thomas Moore (28 May 1779 – 25 February 1852) was an Irish writer, poet, and lyricist celebrated for his ''Irish Melodies''. Their setting of English-language verse to old Irish tunes marked the transition in popular Irish culture from Irish to English. Politically, Moore was recognised in England as a press, or " squib", writer for the aristocratic Whigs; in Ireland he was accounted a Catholic patriot. Married to a Protestant actress and hailed as "Anacreon Moore" after the classical Greek composer of drinking songs and erotic verse, Moore did not profess religious piety. Jørgen Hansen Koch
Jørgen Hansen Koch (4 September 1787 – 30 January 1860) was a Neoclassical Danish architect. He was chief of the national Danish building administration from 1835 and director of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1844 to 1849. Koch and especially his wife Ida Koch were close friends of the writer Hans Christian Andersen, who would typically visit the Koch family on Friday evenings. SS Austria
SS ''Austria'' was a steamship of the Hamburg America Line which sank on 13 September 1858, in one of the worst transatlantic maritime disasters of the nineteenth century, claiming the lives of 449 passengers and crew. The ''Austria'' was built by Caird & Co. of Greenock, Scotland and was launched on 23 June 1857. She was 318 ft and 2,684 BRT, with three masts and single screw propeller propulsion. Christian Wulff (1810–1856)
Christian Wulff (31 July 1810 – 1856) was a Danish naval officer and friend of the writer Hans Christian Andersen. Early life Christian Wulff was born on 31 July 1810 in Copenhagen, the son of Peter Frederik Wulff. He was the brother of Henriette Wulff. Career Wulff joined the Royal Danish Navy as the family tradition prescribed. He became a second lieutenant in 1825 and a first lieutenant in 1835. He reached the rank of captain lieutenant and captain in 1851. Personal life Like his parents and sister, Wulff was a close friend of the writer Hans Christian Andersen. They exchanged many letters and Andersen stayed in his apartment at Amaliegade 37 in Copenhagen from 27 June to 24 August 1848. Jørgen Peter Frederik Wulff
Jørgen Peter Frederik Wulff (6 April 1808 – 8 March 1881) was a Danish naval officer. Early life Wulff was born on 6 April 1808 in Slagelse, the son of Peter Frederik Wulff and Hanne Henriette Wulff née Weinholdt (1784-1836). His paternal uncle was Christian Wulff. Career Wulff became a cadet in 1819 and a second lieutenant in 1824. He visited the Danish West Indies with the frigate '' Diana'' in 1825-26. On his return to Denmark, he was freed from service to join the French navy. The Danish navy was still under reconstruction after the war and, financing being tight, the navy could not afford to build ships and at the same time equip and sail with them. To maintain the naval officers' training, many of them were therefore allowed to sail in foreign navies, including the French Navy.
