Pennsport
Pennsport is a neighborhood in the South Philadelphia section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. Pennsport is home to a large working-class Irish American population, many of them descendants of immigrants from the mid to late 19th century. They maintain social organizations (also called "clubs"), which are located along 2nd Street (known locally as "Two Street"). Each year the clubs spend months preparing costumes, music and performances for Philadelphia's annual Mummers Parade on Broad Street on New Year's Day. At one time Pennsport was proposed as a location for development of casinos along the Philadelphia waterfront. Many residents opposed this. They wanted development that would provide better jobs. The state and city had conducted some negotiations with the Mashuntucket Pequot, whose reservation is based in Connecticut, to establish Foxwoods Casino Philadelphia in this neighborhood, but it never gained approval. Mummers Parade
The Mummers Parade is held each New Year's Day in Philadelphia. Local clubs (usually called "New Years Associations" or "New Years Brigades") compete in one of five categories (Comics, Wench Brigades, Fancies, String Bands, and Fancy Brigades). They prepare elaborate costumes, performance routines, and movable scenery, which take months to complete. This is done in clubhousesmany of which are on or near 2nd Street (called "Two Street" by some local residents) in the Pennsport neighborhood of the city's South Philadelphia sectionwhich also serve as social gathering places for members. The parade has been broadcast since 1993 on WPHL-TV, which has also live streamed the event on its website since 2011. It shares boundaries with Society Hill to the north, Bella Vista to the west and Pennsport to the south. Southwark was originally the Southwark District, a colonial-era municipality in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. Dickinson Square West, Philadelphia is a neighborhood in South Philadelphia bordered by neighborhoods Queen Village to the north, Whitman to the south, Pennsport to the east and Passyunk Square and East Passyunk Crossing to the west. Whitman is a neighborhood in the South Philadelphia section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. It is bounded on the west by Sixth Street, on the east by Front Street, on the south by Bigler Street, and on the north by Snyder Avenue. The name "Whitman" was adopted when the nearby Walt Whitman Bridge was being constructed in the 1950s. Max Raab
Max Louis Raab (June 9, 1926 – February 21, 2008) was an American clothing businessman and film producer. Raab was the originator of the popular Preppy look in American women's fashion during the 1950s. He was also responsible for bringing the film "A Clockwork Orange" to the screen. Early life Max Louis Raab was born to Herman and Fanny Kessler Raab on June 9, 1926 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His mother died when he was twelve. Raab grew up in the city's Tioga neighborhood, attending Rutgers Preparatory School and the Wooster Academy. Raab was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II and served in Germany.
