''Pavilion of Women'' is a 2001 Chinese-American drama film directed by Yim Ho and written by Luo Yan and Paul Collins. The film stars Willem Dafoe, Luo Yan, Sau Sek, John Cho, Yi Ding and Koh Chieng Mun. The film was released on April 20, 2001 in China and on May 4, 2001 in the United States by Universal Focus. It was Universal's first co-production with a Chinese studio. Yim Ho
Yim Ho (Chinese:嚴浩) is a Hong Kong director most active in the 1980s, and a leader of the Hong Kong New Wave. He began his career making television programs for RTHK, then became a film director in 1980. One of his most critically acclaimed works was ''Homecoming'' (1984). This film was different from other films of that period in that it presents certain emotions and sympathies towards the relationship between Mainland China and Hong Kong (the Sino-British Joint Declaration was signed the same year ''Homecoming'' was released). The film brings together two very well known actresses, Josephine Koo and Siqin Gaowa. Anita Mui's theme song with the same title as the film has also been a popular cantopop song. Luo Yan (screenwriter)
Luo Yan (; born 1957 (age 60 ) is a Chinese American actress and screenwriter. She was born in Urumqi, Xinjiang. After having a successful acting career in China, she came to the U.S. in the mid-1980s. She started her own business during the early 1990s and later became the first female Chinese filmmaker to produce, write, and star in a Hollywood film. Both her parents were biology professors. She was raised by her grandparents in Shanghai. When she was 10 years old, her grandfather was arrested and held in concentration camps. He died shortly after his release and Yan Luo had to take responsibility and care for her ailing grandmother at a very young age. While working at the Shanghai Textile Factory, she secretly took acting classes and became an active member of a local theater group.
