Patrícia Ice Arena 37
Easton Arena (styled EASTON Arena, formerly Patrícia Ice Arena 37 and Zimný Štadión Piešťany) is an arena in Piešťany, Slovakia. It was built in 1986 and is primarily used for ice hockey and is the home arena of ŠHK 37 Piešťany. It also hosted matches for the 2002 IIHF World U18 Championships and is a perennial host of the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. It has a capacity of 5,000. The arena was the primary host of the 1987 World Junior Hockey Championships, which are most notably remembered for the Punch-up in Piestany, last game played in the tournament on January 4, 1987. In the contest between Canada men's national junior ice hockey team, Canada and the USSR national junior ice hockey team, Soviet Union, a bench-clearing brawl erupted in the second period. Piešťany
Piešťany (; german: Pistyan, hu, Pöstyén, pl, Pieszczany , cs, Píšťany ) is a town in Slovakia. It is located in the western part of the country within the Trnava Region and is the seat of its own district. It is the biggest and best known spa town in Slovakia and has around 28,000 inhabitants. Etymology The name Piešťany comes from Slovak ''Piesok'' (sand), referring to local sandbanks. The etymology is straightforward – ''Piešťanci'' – people who live on the sandy site and ''Piešťany'' – their settlement. History The first human settlement in the area is dated to the prehistoric times, about 80,000 years ago. USSR National Junior Ice Hockey Team
The Soviet Union men's national under 20 ice hockey team was the national under-20 ice hockey team in the Soviet Union. The team represented the Soviet Union at the International Ice Hockey Federation's IIHF World U20 Championship. The team has won eleven gold medals (first three unofficial, once more as CIS), three silver medals, and two bronze medals at the World U20 Championships. At the 1987 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, the team was disqualified as a result of the Punch-up in Piestany versus the Canada men's national junior ice hockey team. Soviet administrator Yuri Korolev expressed regret that the incident occurred but did not admit any guilt. The IIHF U18 World Championship is an annual event organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation for national under-18 ice hockey teams from around the world. The tournament is usually played in April and is organized according to a system similar to the Ice Hockey World Championships and the IIHF World Junior Championship. 1996 IIHF European Women Championships
The 1996 IIHF European Women Championships were the sixth and final holding of the IIHF European Women Championships. The tournaments were held in March 1996, with Pool A playing in Yaroslavl, Russia during 23–29 March and Pool B playing in Trnava and Piešťany, Slovakia during 12–16 March. The format remained unchanged from the previous year, with promoted replacing relegated in the Pool A tournament. List Of IIHF World Under-20 Championship Medalists
The IIHF World Junior Championship is an annual event organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation for national under-20 ice hockey teams from around the world. It is traditionally held from late December to the beginning of January. The main tournament features the top ten ranked hockey nations in the world, comprising the "Top Division", from which a world champion is crowned. There are also three lower pools—divisions I, II and III—that each play separate tournaments playing for the right to be promoted to a higher pool with the last place team facing relegation to a lower pool. The first official tournament was held in 1977. Prior to that, there had been invitational tournaments in 1974, 1975 and 1976 that were not sanctioned by the IIHF. The Punch-up in Piestany was a bench-clearing brawl between Canada and the Soviet Union during the final game of the 1987 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships in Piešťany, Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia) on January 4, 1987. The incident resulted in the ejection of both teams, and while the Soviets had already been eliminated from medal contention, the disqualification cost Canada a medal – potentially the gold.
