Patriotic Union (Panama)
The Patriotic Union () was a political party in Panama. It was formed on 5 October 2006 when the National Liberal Party (''Partido Nacional Liberal'') and the Solidarity Party (Partido Solidaridad) merged. The party's president was Guillermo Ford. After the party did not reach the minimum votes, it was merged with the Democratic Change Party on 27 March 2011. Panama
Panama ( , ; es, link=no, Panamá ), officially the Republic of Panama ( es, República de Panamá), is a transcontinental country spanning the southern part of North America and the northern part of South America. It is bordered by Costa Rica to the west, Colombia to the southeast, the Caribbean Sea to the north, and the Pacific Ocean to the south. The National Liberal Party ( es, Partido Liberal Nacional) was a liberal party in Panama. The party was an observer at Liberal International. The party was formed in 1903 out of the Panamanian branch of the Colombian Liberal Party, shortly after Panama declared independence. The PNL merged with Solidarity Party (Partido Solidaridad) to form the new Patriotic Union Party (Unión Patriótica) in 2009. The Solidarity Party (''Partido Solidaridad'') was a political party in Panama that merged with the National Liberal Party (''Partido Nacional Liberal'') and formed the new Patriotic Union Party (''Partido Union Patriótica''). At the legislative elections, 2 May 2004, the party won 15.7% of the popular vote and 9 out of 78 seats. Guillermo Ford
Guillermo "Billy" Ford Boyd (November 11, 1936 – March 19, 2011) was the Second Vice President of Panama. He was one of the running mates of presidential candidate Guillermo Endara during the 1989 Panamanian election campaign. The election results were annulled by the Noriega regime before counting finished after it had been shown that Endara and Ford's coalition was leading Noriega's backed candidate by a 3 to 1 margin. After a rally in support of Endara and Ford, members of the Dignity Battalions, armed with guns, pipes, and wooden planks, attacked Ford and his entourage. A photo of the attack on Ford by a member of the Dignity Battalions appeared on the cover of ''Time magazine'', ''Newsweek'', and ''U.S. News''. Democratic Change (Panama)
Democratic Change ( es, Cambio Democrático) is a centre-right political party in Panama. The party was founded on May 20, 1998, by Ricardo Martinelli, owner of the Super 99 supermarket chain. At the end of 2013 the party listed more than 500,000 members, making it one of Panama's two largest parties with a membership almost equal to that of the Democratic Revolutionary Party. In the legislative elections in Panama, elections of May 3, 2009, the party won 23.4% of the popular vote and 14 out of 78 seats. In the presidential elections of the same year, the party leader, Ricardo Martinelli, was elected President of Panama with 59.97% of the vote.
